Toby's POV:
Now that Grace and Riley are safe, we don't have anything to worry about except when this whole thing is going to be cleared up. Which could take awhile.
For now though, were stuck down here in the storm shelter. We have two cots, that Grace and Riley sleep on, some food and water that is kept down here, and we have a few things to keep us warm.
Its freezing in here at night. The cold ground we sleep on doesn't have anything stopping my body from touching it, so I have to sleep with my coat on to stay warm. And there's not a lot of space in here, so no, I can't just snuggle up with Sam.
She does sleep beside me though, with her head in the crook of my shoulder. I know she doesn't sleep very well because every time she wakes up, she gets up to go check on Grace and Riley, and that wakes me up as well. I just hope she doesn't stop sleeping for good, like awhile ago. But it could be it. She still doesn't know where her parents are.
One time when she wakes up to go check on them, she comes back quicker than usual and instead of laying back down, she sits against the wall beside me, wrapping her arms around her knees.
"Sam?" I whisper turning my head toward her. She looks down at me with a blank stare. "You okay?" I sit up and sit next to her.
"I'm fine. I just can't sleep." I wrap an arm around her and pull her against me. She rests her head against my shoulder. "I'm just thinking about when this is over. Cause it has to stop sometime."
She doesn't even have to say it. I know exactly what she's talking about. When this is all over, things go back to normal. I go back home to Florida, and Sam, she says here in Chicago. Away from me and I from her.
I know we plan on finishing this tour that never really started, but that could be for months. That's too long. Were both seventeen, we have one more year of highschool after this one, and then we can legally be together. Not together as in married, but together as in 'not hundreds of miles apart.' But maybe she will be my wife one day. I know I wouldn't mind.
"You know its not going to tear us apart. Nothing will, I promise." I tell her.
"I know. But its so hard." She pauses. "When you left to go to Smith's house, you were gone for an hour. An hour. And I couldn't stand it. What am I going to do when your gone for good?" She says panicking. If I didn't know her, I'd still know she's probably crying.
"Hey, I won't be gone for good. I never will be. I'll be just a phone call away at any time. At three in the morning when your bored out of your mind, you can call me. I don't care."
"Yeah you will. You hate when people wake you up." She points out.
"....not the point Sam." I say and smile against her cheek. I kiss her cheekbone and hold her tight. After a few moments I say, "its going to be hard for me too you know. I hate leaving you knowing that you need me just as bad as I need you."
"You know what sucks?" She randomly asks.
"Hmm?"
"Our days left together are slowly diminishing and yet were stuck in here not able to do anything."
"Anything, huh?"
"Toby."
"You want to do something? I can arrange for that."
"Toby stop!" She says giggling.
"You love me."
"I do."
"Yaay. Guess what? I love you too." I whisper. I kiss her cheek, then her nose, then eventually her lips.
She pulls away from me and says, "remember when you had to work for my kisses?" She raises her eyebrows wondering whatever happened to that.
"Well," I say pausing. "Its hard work holding myself back. Especially when were locked in here with nothing to do with so many people. And its even harder when you promised me that we'd 'maybe' finish what we started before. Hard work Sam I'm telling ya."
"I need out of this place."
"So we can mak-"
"No!" She laughs and says. "I need out cause I'm sick of being in here. Can't we at least go back to the house?"
"Maybe. Ask your brother. He knows what he's doing."
"He always does, doesn't he? Its hard to believe were related sometimes."
"Not really. Your both smarter than I am." I say laughing.
"Yeah I'm smart. And I care about my education too." She says sarcastically. "That's why I'm sooo worried about those finals coming up..." She pauses and changes her mood. "Crap... That's gonna hurt me..."
"To be honest, my grades sucked. I always thought I'd be with the band my whole life. Never need another job that way."
"Seems easy enough. Buuuut.... My dad would kill me. If I got a bad grade I mean. But he knows now I guess that music is what I'm into so hopefully he won't. He relys on Andrew and Rhian for that kinda stuff. I missed the gene for intelligence I think."
"Yeah, but you got the best gene of them all. Your talented and beautiful and nothing short of perfect. And I'm happy to call you mine." I lean in to kiss her lips but she stops me.
"You know what gene you got? Mine." She smiles and kisses me. I grab her and pull her closer, and for a moment, I forget that anyone else is here.
She pulls away only enough to say,"you also got the dominant gene," against my lips.
"What?" I ask thoroughly confused.
"For eye color." I give her a look, still confused. "Connor got the recessive gene for eye color. That's why he has blue eyes... " I keep looking at her blankly. "Yeah never mind. I hate biology. Its ruined my life." She rests her head on my shoulder.
"Okay." I say still confused but smiling. If we were alone, shed probably go on about why and how its possible, confusing me even more. It wouldn't go well, let's just say that.
We sit against the wall for awhile, but before I fall asleep again, she whispers, "do you notice anything different? About Riley and Grace?"
"Hmm...I don't know. I haven't really talked with them. I wouldn't be surprised though, with whatever they went through."
"Well when I got up last, they were awake. And I didn't bother them cuz they were, um, I don't know... Holding hands?" She says questioning herself.
"Really?!" I don't know why but this is exciting. "I ship them. I ship them hard!"
"Toby you sound like a teenage girl. Shut up or you'll wake everyone up." She says smiling and holding back a laugh.
"What are we gonna do?" I ask.
"About what?"
"Them! What are we gonna do about them!?"
"Toby-"
"This is exciting. I don't think nice been this excited since I first kissed you. Wow." By now she's laughing her head off and she's trying to stay quiet. I over exaggerate myself to make her laugh harder. "Oh my god! What if they... Oh my god. What if they kissed!"
"Toby! Shut up!!" But I keep going. For her. But who knows.... Maybe I do ship them... Hmm...
"And what if-"
"Will you stop your gonna wake everyone up!" She says leaning over me and covering my mouth with her hand. I stop and she moves it away.
"I'm not the one laughing." I say with a straight face.
"Your making me laugh!" She climbs off of me whining but I pull her back. "Toby! Stop! Lemme goo!"
"Yeah Sam be quiet your gonna wake everybody up." I tell her.
"Oh my god, your so mean to me." She says and stops fighting me. She lays her head on my chest and gets comfortable.
"Yeah but you love me."
"Yeah, I love you." She traces a finger on my chest and before I fall asleep, I feel her touch go all the way to my heart, which loves her more than anything.
