Chapter Forty Four

A couple weeks had passed since Han had left for Tokyo. He had written her about a guy he had met, whom he referred to as "DK." The nickname apparently meant that the man was the "Drift King" of Tokyo. Daria hadn't really learned too much about drifting, but Han was the one that taught her so she was better than good. In Han's opinion, she was an excellent drifter, but she didn't think so since she hadn't had as much practice as a person normally would to become an expert drift racer.

Sam had told Daria that Jacob Black would be phasing soon, so she was on alert for a new member of the pack. She hadn't really learned much about Jacob, but she knew he could be irritating, according to Embry and Paul. Jared swore he hadn't known Jacob as well as Embry and Paul did, so he didn't judge the boy as harshly as everyone else seemed to. Paul believed Sam wasn't happy about Jacob's phasing, since Jacob was supposed to be the real alpha of the pack. Jacob had alpha blood, but that didn't mean he'd have to be alpha if he didn't want to be alpha.

The letters between Han and Daria weren't very often, maybe every ten days or so. Han believed DK was part of a "mafia" of sorts, so he wanted to be careful with his letters, especially if he was going to be getting into business with him. Daria didn't like the idea of Han being in something so shady, but she knew he would be safe. She knew he was careful, but she still worried about him.

Daria had also talked to her parents and the rest of her family, and she learned that her father knew where Han was staying. He referred to Tokyo as Han's Mexico, which Daria understood almost immediately. She knew how important Tokyo was to Han, even though he didn't have any of his other family around with him.

"Jacob has phased!" Seth exclaimed, as he ran into the pack house, successfully pulling Daria from her thoughts.

"Is Sam bringing him here?" Daria asked, causing Seth to shake his head.

"No, he wants to talk to him about the whole alpha blood thing first. He'll bring him here later." Seth answered, as he sat down at the table and grabbed a cookie from the plate on the table.

"Is he safe to have around Dora? I remember Leah wasn't the best at first, but she was safe around my baby." Daria commented, and Seth smiled.

"Don't worry, Darling, the pack will keep you and Dora safe. You're both our top priorities." He replied, and Daria smiled as well.

Daria didn't like the idea of the pack putting their lives on the line for her, but she also cherished their protective nature. If it wasn't for them, she and Nymphadora would've been a snack for the vampire that had snuck into her house. She had given them her everlasting gratitude for saving her and her daughter, even though they didn't have to save them from the crazy woman.

"Darling! Sam said to have an extra plate ready for dinner. Jacob will be joining us." Paul announced, as he entered the pack house.

"You don't sound too thrilled about it." Daria commented, causing Paul to snort humorlessly.

"I didn't want Jacob to be a part of the pack, since he's been an entitled little brat ever since Sam's pack began. Jacob seemed to believe he was better than everyone else, though we both know he's not." Paul said, and Daria nodded.

"Maybe Sam will beat some sense into him." She replied, as Paul sighed.

"If he doesn't take his place as alpha. I will not follow Jacob's orders. I'll become rogue before I ever listen to Jacob." Paul spat, causing Daria to smile slightly.

"Don't worry, Paul, I have a feeling Jacob won't be strong enough to take the alpha position. Jacob seems to be too weak minded for the position." Daria said, as she laid a comforting hand on Paul's shoulder, seeming to calm him down.

Daria always seemed to have a calming aura when she was around. She could calm the pack down easily--for the most part--as long as nothing serious was going on. She couldn't always calm them down, but it sometimes worked well for her and the others.

"He'll be furious when he finds out he has to stay away from that leech-lover, Isabella Swan. He's been obsessed with her since she came back to Forks." Paul informed her, and Daria laughed lightly.

"That boy isn't old enough to find the right girl yet. He'll learn from his terrible choices. She'll choose her vampy boyfriend, and he'll be left out in the rain, possibly in a literal sense. He better not be rude to Dora and I. You and I both know I'm not afraid to put someone in their place. You've seen my family, so you know I can do it." Daria said, causing Paul to laugh as well.

"I'd love to see that. He'd be scared to death of you, especially since he wouldn't be able to do anything about you yelling at him without angering Sam, and the rest of us of course. Hell, I think Leah would even beat the crap out of Jacob." Paul replied, and Daria nodded.

"She may not like me much, but I think she dislikes Jacob a lot more." Daria commented, and Paul agreed.

"Don't worry about him being rude to you or Nymph, Darling. We'll handle him. I'll kick his ass if he even gives you two the wrong look." Paul stated, causing Daria to smile.

Daria was glad to have the pack, but she honestly really liked Paul. Out of all of them, she would consider Paul to be her best friend. He reminded her so much of her family, especially with his protectiveness and hotheaded nature. She knew she had feelings for Sam, so it wasn't feelings that she had for Paul. Honestly, Paul was like the brother she always wanted. He was one of her favorite people now, as was Sam, and most of the pack...
