Bonnie started skipping along the path to Vermilion City as the group followed her shortly behind. She smiled as she looked down at her purse and saw her small mouse friend, peacefully sleeping the day away. Ash then ran forward towards the girl and smiled at Bonnie.
"So you're going to fight at the Vermilion City gym next?" Ash asked the girl who continued the skip along the path.
"That's the plan," she stated as she smiled back to her idol.
"Well, the gym leader specializes in water types," Ash said, making the girl stop skipping for a moment. "So Dedenne and your Plusle will be most effective against her." Bonnie nodded as she looked at the mouse pokemon, sleeping in her bag. Serena watched the two trainers as they continued to talk and strategize Bonnie's next battle. She let out a loving smile as her thoughts drifted farther away from reality, thinking of all the times she and Ash will have.
"I can't believe you guys started dating," May said, making Serena snap back into reality. She continued to smile and looked at the brunette.
"Someone had to break his dense skull," Serena added as she giggled to herself. May joined in, but stopped as she looked at the Kanto trainer.
"You know," May said as she watched the Alolan Champion talk to the Kalos trainer. "He really grew up a lot from the last time we met back in Sinnoh." Serena nodded.
"Same here," Dawn jumped in, surprising the two coordinators. "He really did change a lot." Dawn quickly glanced at the Kalos coordinator and let out a sigh. "Hey Serena, can I talk to you for a sec." The Kalos coordinator nodded. She then took her aside and let her head down, full of disappointment.
"Umm Dawn," Senena said, concerned about her friend. "You alr-"
"I'm sorry," Dawn said as a tear dropped down, hitting the soft ground. Serena continued to look at the girl, more confused.
"What do you mean?"
"A few nights ago..." Dawn paused as she slowly lifted up her head, facing Serena. "I kissed him." Silence filled the two friends as they processed the information, but then laughter rose up from the Kalos girl. Dawn stood there more confused as ever as she watched her friend continue to laugh a bit.
"You're worried about that?" Serena asked her friend, who nodded. She then looked up to the blue sky as she watched the Pidgeys fly amongst the endless sky. "Don't be. At the time, we weren't dating so you're good." Serena then looked at her friend and gave her friend a sly smile and added, "Plus, I did the same thing a while back." Dawn looked at the Kalos girl, shocked as she watched her friend let out a small smile.
"YOU DID WHAT???" Dawn blurted out, scaring some wild pokemon in the process.
"I kissed Ash before I left for my journey," Serena said as she walked faster, trying to leave the speechless girl behind.
"Oh no you don't!" Dawn yelled as she ran after the Kalos girl. "You're not getting out of this one!"
It wasn't long before night fell across the land, covering the forest in a nightly darkness. The group of kids set up their tents around the fire as they sat underneath the stars. They laughed as they listened to the cracking crisps of the flames as it danced on the logs of the campfire. There pokemon played as the group of kids smiled under the night sky.
"So what pokemon are you going to use for the competition?" May asked the blonde girl. Dawn smiled as she looked at her partner running after the energetic grass type pokemon as they fought over that last macaroon.
"I think I might use Piplup," Dawn said, grabbing the water pokemon's attention. May smiled and turned her attention to the Kalos girl.
"What about you?" May asked the girl. "You going to use Braxin again?" Serena thought about it and shook her head.
"I think I'm going to use..." Just then, Pikachu hopped on her lap, making the Kalos girl hatch an idea. "You," Serena said as she picked up the yellow mouse. Ash looked at his girlfriend with confusion, but smiled as she cuddled with his partner.
"What do you mean?" Dawn asked the girl.
"I'm going to use Pikachu for the first round," Serena said with a smile as she put the electric mouse on her lap.
"What?!?!" Everyone shouted, waking up nearby wild pokemon.
"Can you do that?" Clemont asked the girl.
"I don't see why not," Serena replied, shrugging. "Unless you're not ok with it." Everyone turned their attention to the Kanto trainer as sweat started to drip down his face.
"Don't ask me," Ash said, putting his hands up in the air. "You got to ask him." He then pointed to the yellow mouse.
"Would you like to compete with me in a contest?" Without hesitation, the yellow pokemon nodded with glee, smiling with joy. Serena then hugged the pokemon and giggled as the group watched the two.
"Are you ok with this?" Clemont asked the Kanto trainer as the girls started talking about their strategies. "This could get her disqualified from all the competition, and might ruin her reputation." Ash shook his head as he smiled at his girl who was full of excitement for the near future.
"I think it would be fine," Ash said as he turned his head towards the gym leader. "If she wants to, she can do it. But we can play it by ear. Just enjoy yourself in the moment when our time is young. Just relax." Clemont stared at the boy as Ash watched his girlfriend play with his yellow partner, forming a grin on the Kanto trainer's face.
"Ok," Clemont said. "I believe you."
