Chapter 6 - Poolside Manners

The phone rings and I take the call without checking, I know only Alex has this number.

"Hey Alex" I say.

"Are you guys fine, did you get to Chicago alright, how was the flight?"

"Everything is ok, stop worrying so much, we're here at the apartment, we got here about an hour ago,"

"Ok good, I can't help that I worry about you, if anything happens to you guys, I couldn't live with myself"

"You've done more for us than you had to, and we are grateful.  I don't know if or how I could ever repay you, Alex."

"I would do anything for you, you and those kids are family McKenzie.  I could never forgive myself if anything happened to you and it was within my power to help, and I didn't."

"I know Alex, but still, you didn't have to, and I can't thank you enough, for what you do for us"

"The fact that you finally left that place is all the thanks I need. Now you can repay me by making sure that you take care of yourself.  I promised Jake that I would always take care of his little sisters if anything happened to him.  I'm just sorry I couldn't get Natalia out too."

"Yeah, me too" I sigh sadly. "So, are you going to come by before we leave?"

"I will try, I'm currently in Massachusetts, I will leave in a couple of days I need to stay in the area to see what Giorgio's next move is.  At least for now we are one step ahead we have to keep it that way"

"Oh, I didn't know you were there"

"I came as soon as you called me and told me you guys were leaving, I wanted to make sure that if there were any complications that I would be here"

"When are you leaving, he might suspect that you helped?" I say.

"Yeah, he will but I don't care what Giorgio thinks I only care about your safety.  I will leave soon though, have you decided where you go after Chicago?. Although the apartment is yours if you want it, you are welcome to stay in Chicago"

"No, we haven't decided yet. You know he would find us in Chicago, he will search every property you and your family own until he finds Sam, it's too risky.  It must be somewhere out of sight where he wouldn't think of looking. I was thinking of a few places, I guess we can talk about them when I make my shortlist.  The original plan was to leave the country, but I can't do that when Natalia... you know.  I can't leave her here alone"

"I understand, just promise me that wherever you go you will try to live a little, you deserve to McKenzie"

"Ok, I promise.  On another note, this place is sick, maybe I should stay here instead, ha-ha" I say trying to change the serious tone of this conversation.

"Well, I'm glad you like it, mi casa es su casa" he says, and I hear no humor in his voice.  I wish things were different and I didn't have to leave, I will miss Alex a lot!

"I am taking a bath, I'm about to get out, I'll talk to you tomorrow" I say unable to find a response for his statement.  Deep down I want to take him up on his offer this man lives forever in my heart.

"Did you get rid of your old phone?"

"Yes, I threw it out when I left the house"

"Ok, call me if you need anything, anytime"

"Yes, bye, Alex"

" Good night McKenzie." he says and my heart rate speeds up, with just the sound of his voice.
