I was 14 years old, and Natalia was eighteen when she met Giorgio . The man who would turn into my family's poison and a corrupting influence for little Sam. He took a liking to my sister Natalia, and she fell for all his bullshit and so here we are.
The ruthless drug dealing criminal, has a few law enforcements officers on his payroll. Alex tells me that these officers are people at the top of the food chain in law enforcement. In our little town of Bretton Wood, Massachusetts no one was safe from Giorgio's wrath.
Charges against him never stuck, and he never spends a night in jail, and still manages to keep his law-abiding citizen routine intact and it's perplexing. You couldn't really tell what his real profession was by looking because he doesn't really stand out in a sea of people.
He owns a few nice cars, lives in a fancy mansion, and owns a few night clubs, some of them are exclusive members only. As far as I know a lot of sketchy business happens at these establishments, but all the who's who in Massachusetts go to these clubs.
Giorgio keeps Natalia on a leash and they both do drugs in the presence of Sophie and Sam. Sam has been exposed to his parent's bad behavior daily, ever since he was born. He has been observing his parents getting high for as long as I can remember.
In the beginning, Giorgio wined and dined Natalia, showed her his sweet caring side at first. Then when she got pregnant, he dropped the caring boyfriend act and became abusive.
Toxic, that's how I describe the man who took my sister who was studying to be a teacher of chemistry and gets her hooked-on drugs. If that isn't bad enough, he convinced her to take the basement of our dead parents' house and turn it into a drug lab. Then he turned Natalia into the "drugs top chef". All while convincing her that she could never leave him because no one would want her.
You need a certain level of toxicity to do what Giorgio has managed to accomplish by destroying my tenacious sister's self-confidence. Level: brain-eating amoeba.
As I sit on the bed of the apartment watching despondently as Sam sleeps, I think to myself, "this kid could sleep through the apocalypse," and I smile, a sad smile. I like that about him, at least when he's asleep, he doesn't have to deal with his harsh reality.
I can remember the last time I slept that soundly, it was seven years ago on December 22nd, 2014, the night before my mother died. Two days before Christmas, and one year after my sister started dating Giorgio. It was also one year and three months after our dad died and two years after our eldest sibling, our brother Jake died.
The doctor said my mother died of a heart attack, but I believe she died of a broken heart. She knew my sister's life would be ruined if Natalia didn't walk away from Giorgio. Mom could not live while watching another one of the people she loved more than life itself be destroyed. She couldn't live through the train wreck that was Natalia and Giorgio knowing she could do nothing to stop it.
It isn't that mom did not try, but my sister was convinced that she was in love. Natalia convinced herself that Giorgio was a good man, and maybe he was good to her but there must have been red flags. No one can hide their true self for too long, eventually it will be revealed.
Giorgio controlled Natalia's life, she was friendly, outgoing and happy, then he came along and sucked the life, the soul out of her. No matter how much he would hurt her, no matter how much mom pleaded, she didn't listen.
Alex who worked with the FBI told her about Giorgio, and not even then would she listen. He would fuck up time and time again she would get mad and leave him. Then he would come back pleading and making promises to change but they never materialized.
