Skinny jeans and a silk camisole, paired with flip flops are laying on the bed while I put my hair in a ponytail. As much as I don't want to admit it, I am also looking forward to tonight. This date is not mine, its Sam's but maybe I can live vicariously through Sam tonight.
Even though Michael and I could never have anything, it still feels good to know that a guy like that desires you. So much so that he would plan a movie date with your "son" just to spend time with you. I smile at myself in the mirror as the thought comes to mind.
At twenty-two years old I have never dated anyone and the one time I kissed a boy it was Alex, but he never responded favorably to it. Back then I was only sixteen and he saw me as a little sister. Plus, dark times makes you cold, and withdrawn, I never felt like it was ever the right time to date. I've been asked out plenty, but I've always been "busy" just so I wouldn't have to get close to anyone. Knowing that one day I would go ghost, having a relationship would have only complicated things.
I sit in my bed and wait for Alex's call and five minutes later my phone rings, and I quickly pick it up.
"Hello" I say, and he responds "McKenzie!"
"Did you find anything?"
"He doesn't live in apartment 528, his mother and father do. He lives in Lincoln Park, not far from where his parents live, he manages an investment company that his father owns"
"Oh, seems like he's normal enough I guess" I say.
"Hmm, yeah, I see nothing alarming" Alex says.
"If you think we should cancel this I can do that. I mean I don't want to cause any problems for us."
"No, as long as you are comfortable, you should let Sam keep his plans"
"Ok, yeah, there is no reason to disappoint Sam, right?" I say and hang up the phone. It's disappointing that he doesn't seem bothered by me hanging out with another man. What do I need to do to make him see me in that light?
The kids and I sit on the couch and wait for Michael to arrive and at 7pm sharp there is a knock on the door. I open the door and Michael is standing there tall and towering looking down at me. He has a six pack of coke, M&M's, Lay's potato chips and Doritos in his hand. I look back and forth at his face and the snacks in his hand. Damn this boy is gorgeous and he knows it and I can't help but notice it. The way he smiles and stares into my eyes with those grey eyes was like he was seeing deep down to my soul.
"Where is the army that you are going to feed?" I say ending the silence between us.
"Well, I wasn't sure what, my date liked so I brought the works" he says staring at me, and I'm not sure who the date is, Sam or me.
"Well lose the soda, or he won't be able to sleep tonight, and you can't go wrong with Lays"
"Super! so now I know what Tom likes what about Abby?" I look at him and the smirk on his face and thought to myself 'do these games really work on women'.
"I guess you will have to ask her, good luck" I say and smile at him.
I stepped aside letting him inside the apartment and Sophie walks over and proceeds to stare Michael down.
"Doritos or M&M? sorry Lays is for Sam" he says as he extends his hands full of snacks toward Sophie. She takes the Doritos without blinking and says "thank you, Michael". She then turns around and walk back to the couch and tell Sam that his guest was here.
"Sorry, Abby isn't a people person" I say apologetically.
"Really? I couldn't tell" he says then smiles, and I smile back "She's protective of her sister and I can see why" he says while gazing into my eyes.
