"Hey Cam!" I spoke into my phone. I tried to sound as cheerful as I possibly could.
"Hey Paige! We still on for tonight?" He asked.
I sighed. He must've heard me, because I heard him sigh too.
"You can't, can you?" He predicted.
"Something came up. I know it always happens. I'm so sorry."
He hesitated to speak, confirming to me that he wasn't happy. "Is there a day that you can promise me we'll hangout?"
"I'll take a look on my calendar and if I'm not available by next week then I'll cancel something for you." I said.
He lightly chuckled. "Promise?"
"Promise." I confirmed.
"Okay, call me soon."
"I will. See ya." I smiled.
"See ya." He hung up. I set my phone in my lap. It slid off of the soft fabric on my PINK sweats, and onto the floor. I was too lazy to pick it up.
"Are you sure you want to cancel for me?" Jack looked at me from across the room. He was laying on the other couch all sprawled out.
I shrugged and looked at my phone on the ground. "As long as we do something fun tonight." I smiled.
"You always have fun with me." He grinned.
"I'm not right now." I said.
"Let's play hide and seek." He looked at me with bright eyes, like a 5 year old.
I giggled. "Oookay."
"Count to 300." He said, jumping up from his permanent position on the couch.
"Umm wait, 300? What are you going to do? Drive to Nevada?"
He laughed. "Close your eyes and count Paige!"
I playfully rolled my eyes and turned my head into the couch.
"One.. Two.. Three.. Four.." I began. It took me like 5 minutes before I actually finished counting. I uncovered my eyes, feeling blinded by the light coming in through the window. "READY OR NOT, HEAR I COME!" I chanted. I felt kind I was a little kid again.
I walked down the hallway, checking each room. Not there. After checking the entire house, I decided to go into the front yard. I didn't hear him open the front door, so I doubted he'd be out here. But you never know.. He's tricky.
I walked around the side of the house. I didn't expect him to be behind the giant shrub bush, but as soon as I walked past him, he popped out and began chasing me. I screamed and laughed, running to the front of the house and out the gate, sprinting down the sidewalk. Good thing Jack didn't run track. He's faster, but I can go for longer.
Just as I was running down the sidewalk, I could hear his shoes hitting the sidewalk closer and closer behind me. I looked ahead, determined to outrun him.
I glanced at the house we were quickly approaching, and I saw a couple fighting on the porch. Before we got close enough for them to see us, I stopped in my tracks.
"What are you-" Jack began to speak.
"Shhh!!" I said. I pointed to the guy and the girl.
We stayed out of sight, watching them.
"You know what? Keep her. I didn't want her anyways!" The guy screamed.
"I know you don't! You don't love anyone or anything!" She screamed back.
"Just shut up! You NEVER shut up!" He yelled.
"Leave! Get out of here!" She pushed him off the step of the porch. Unexpectedly, he fell to the ground. It looks like he forgot the step.
He aggressively shot up and over to her. He grabbed her by the hair and threw her to the ground.
"Oh my god!" I covered my mouth in shock, looking at Jack. His expression was livid.
The man was tall and pretty slim. He had black hair that matched his clothes and a scruffy gotee. The woman looked like the complete opposite. She could be one of my mom's friends or something. Her bobbed brown hair was curled, and she wore a purple T-shirt with jeans.
Before I could study anything else, the man kicked her. Right in the ribs.
I gasped, looking at Jack. He was just as shocked as I was. I didn't get to say anything to him before he went sprinting into their yard.
"HEY!" Jack yelled, running over to the guy.
"Oh my god." I said to myself. I walked over to the yard, not prepared for what was about to happen.
