Taehyung was panting.
The raspy sound loud to his ears as he was running up the flight of stairs to Jungkook's room like his life depended on it, stumbling forward quite a few times, knees colliding with the harsh cement but he was instantly getting up and running again.
He needed to see Jungkook. Desperately. Something in the back of his head was whispering to him that this was going to be the last time he'd ever get to see him.
But why weren't the stairs ending?
Taehyung kept passing the landings and climbing up the next set of stairs only in the hope that he'd see Jungkook's door on the upcoming floor. But no, every single landing was welcoming him with another flight of stairs, his footsteps thudding against them awfully loudly in the eerie silence, as if all of a sudden everybody else in the world had vanished...or, more likely, died.
But Taehyung still ran. He didn't know what had gotten into him. He was scared, panicked, running out of breath, grunts after grunts falling out of his lips as he felt like his heart was going to jump out through his throat any moment if he didn't stop, yet he didn't want to give up.
He didn't know how many thousands of steps or for how long he kept climbing before he finally came to a halt. Not because the fear that he was running in vain and Jungkook had likely vanished with everyone else as well completely overtook him, but God, he finally found the boy with those beautiful doe eyes smiling at him at the end of one of the uncountable sets of stairs.
"Jungkook!" He breathed out, voice wavering for the unbounded happiness he felt to see the younger after the ceaseless run, a lump rising up to the back of his throat which didn't take its time to turn into tears as he took the final three steps and threw his arms around Jungkook, letting his tears fall on the younger's shoulder.
"Hi." Jungkook whispered, a smile audible in his tone while he caressed Taehyung's back in a soothing manner, "Are you crying? Why are you crying? Don't cry. Nothing's gonna happen, Taehyungie hyung. I won't let anything happen to you."
Those words, especially that 'Taehyungie hyung' did wonders in calming Taehyung down, making him hug Jungkook tighter as he sniffled, his tears slowly coming to a stop.
But he didn't pull away from the hug yet, neither did Jungkook. They stayed like that for so so long, and then suddenly, Taehyung felt that familiar blinding urge to kiss Jungkook, stronger than ever before.
Without wasting time, he pulled away a little, hands around Jungkook's shoulders as he looked at the younger, but he stilled for a moment, confusion and fear washing over him when he saw Jungkook's face, how his pupils were blown, doe eyes focused on something behind Taehyung, seeming like they'd pop out of their sockets any time, his jaws clenched.
Something had scared Jungkook.
Taehyung turned his head around, looking over his shoulder to see what exactly it was, and the blood in his veins turned ice-cold when he saw the sight.
