Kaelynn's P.O.V.
Rebecca and I were running late to go to the police station. It was 8:07 when we left the house, and to most people, it wouldn't be a big difference. But to me, it was a HUGE one. I was losing time, which is a valuable thing to me, and Becky knows this because she rushed me to the car.
"Are you nervous?" Becky asked, glancing at me.
"A little, but really excited at the same time." I kept fumbling my hands and looking ahead, counting the minutes that went by before we saw our destination.
"Take a right here," I instructed, and Becky did as I said.
We were there in a couple of minutes, and I sat in the car for a minute to recollect my thoughts. I stepped out and closed the car door, then saw another, more expensive, car pull up behind ours. Becky linked our arms together and knocked on the door when someone in the other car called my name.
I turned and watched as someone who I didn't think would even think about coming walk towards me.
"Mason?" I said out of shock.
"Hey, Kaelynn," Mason said with a big smile on his face.
Unintentionally, I dropped Becky's arm. "What are you doing here? I thought you had a--"
"Party," he finished, stopping in front of me. "I couldn't stand being there without you. So, I decided to ditch it and come with you."
A smile appeared on my face as I went to hug him. I didn't hug him as long as I would normally want to, because he reeked of some different cologne. "That's so sweet, but what are you wearing?"
"Some stuff Regina picked out for me. Says I'll 'smell likeh a real man'."
"Well, it stinks," I laughed.
Mason laughed too, then looked at something behind me. "Heyyy, Reba."
"Shut up, Mason!" Becky called from behind me. "And can we go in now? I don't like this 'lovefest' we're having out here."
So, we knocked on the door again, and Officer Dun came and opened it. His pink face screwed up in confusion as he looked at the three of us standing at the door. "Kaelynn, are these your...friends?" He asked.
"Yeah, I wanted them to come and help me, if it's okay with you?" I asked, giving him my best smile.
"Yeah. C'mon in, so nobody sees us."
The three of us clambered inside the semi-dark building, then followed Dun into another room, which was his office. His desk wasn't clean with a stack of paper and other office tools like usual. This time, there was a big manila folder right in the middle of it. A board hung next to his desk, with pictures, sticky notes, and documents about a crime scene. OUR crime scene.
"I set everything up about your crime scene. I pulled all the files out, and everything. There are donuts and warm coffee on the table over there," Dun pointed to a table beside a file cabinet with a box of Krispy Kreme donuts and a tray of Starbucks coffee. It only had two cups in it. "I'll get some more now, okay? Don't leave this room, okay?"
We all nodded our heads, and Dun left the room.
"He seems nice," Becky sarcasrically said.
"He is, Becky," I stood up for my favorite officer. Then, I went to the manila folder first, with Becky and Mason behind. I opened it and looked at the many documents inside. Newspaper clippings, papers written on what happened, license and legal papers, and even more pictures. He wasn't lying when he said he had everything.
"Wow," Becky breathed, and I turned to see her staring at the board. Pictures of my mom's car was up there, how totalled it looked, and I froze. There were even some of the other vehicle, speeding away. I stared at the figure in the driver's side, as if staring would tell me who it was.
"You okay?" Mason asked, rubbing my upper arms.
"Y-yeah." I nodded, then went back to the files. They held so much information, they even got the story of what happened. Probably because of Char. Then, I got to some medical records, that included the three of us. Char wasn't really damaged, just cuts and...a broken arm? I never realized she had a broken arm! How could I have been so blind?
I went to mine next. Broken bones, cuts, burns, and...minor brain damage? That must explain why my nerves are everywhere, and my conditions! I thought back to what happened that day. The flames, cuts, panicking... Then, I lifted my shirt up halfway. I saw the cut I got when I was pulling my mom out the car, and glass scraped against my belly. How could I not have noticed these things before?
Then, was my mom's. She had many bones broken, lots of bloodloss, burns, was paralyzed in the legs, and also had brain damage...She had major brain damage, and the doctors were surprised she didn't die on impact. And she died because of it. My hands found my arms, and I stared rubbing them.
"Are you okay, Kaelynn?" Mason asked, turning my whole body around to face him.
I shook my head. "How could they do this to her?" I started to cry.
"Shhh, it's okay," Mason cooed, hugging me. "We'll find this guy soon." He wiped my tears away, and I was glad he did, because I was sure I was on the edge of another panic attack.
His eyes eyes focused on something on the table. "Is this her? Your mom?"
My eyes followed his to find a picture of my mom. She was smiling with her beautiful smile, and genuinely looked happy. I smiled. "Yeah, that's her."
"She's really beautiful. Just like you."
I felt myself blush, but tried to stay focused. Even though I may like Mason just a teeny-weeny bit mlre than I should, he can't distract me on something so important.
Turns out, there were multiple pictures of her, all just weeks or days before the accident. And they weren't just selfies either. It was if the cameraman was...spying on her. But, who would do such a thing?
"Somebody planned this," I muttered.
"The same thought I had," Becky added. "This definately doesn't look like a normal accident. I mean, the culprit had a stolen car!"
As I absorbed the pictures of not just my mom, but of Char and I, too, one thought popped into my head, and I started crying.
"I need Charlize," I sobbed.
"What?" Mason asked.
"I need Charlize!" I yelled. "I need my sister!"
Becky saw me and looked around. "Where's your phone, Kay?"
"I don't know, but I need my sister! I want to know that she's safe!"
I had begun freaking out at that point, and ran my hands through my hair, and crying loudly. Then, I sat on the ground and cried and cried violently. This can't be true! It can't!
"Kaelynn!" Was the last thing I heard before familiar blackness overtook my body.
