"I'm listening." I nodded giving doctor John my full attention.
"Daniel's state actually improved on the first day, but then it got worse. We can't carry on with that." He shook his head.
"Isn't there any other way instead of that surgery?"
"His state is very severe. I'm afraid, there's nothing else we can do." He frowned rubbing his face in frustration. "I already announced that we need a heart, and I also sent this announcement to other hospitals."
"There must be a way-" I shook my head, but he cut me off with a sigh.
"Miss Amber, I know that it's hard for you, but I swear that we can't do anything else."
"How am I going to tell him that?" My eyes watered.
"I will take care of that. To tell you the truth, I don't want to tell him anything because if he started to think negatively, everything will get more complicated, but at the same time, he's so hard headed that we need to explain to him that it's so serious to make sure that he abides by all the rules." He groaned.
"When are you going to tell him?"
"Now, and I- I want you to be with him."
"Okay." I whispered getting up.
"Be strong." He whispered as we stopped in front of Daniel's room. I just nodded pushing the door open.
"I'm back." I smiled sitting next to him on the bed.
"Finally," He smiled.
"How are you feeling?" Doctor John asked.
"Fine." He shrugged.
"Any pain?"
"I feel dizzy and tired. I don't know, but something is off." He frowned, and I held his hand tightly.
"That's normal. We need to talk a bit, though." He sighed.
"Sure." Daniel nodded quietly.
"I was just discussing your state with Miss Amber, and we've been trying two strong medicines on you, that's why you're feeling tired," He paused looking at me, and I just nodded for him to continue. "but- your body is not responding to them, so we have no choice but to- make a surgery."
"What kind of surgery?" Daniel looked so serious.
"Heart transplant."
"What?" He narrowed his eyes looking at me.
"Daniel, calm down." I whispered to him.
"From where are you going to get the heart?" He asked.
"We made an announcement, and I hope that we find a donor quick enough."
"Doctor John, there must be a mistake. I am feeling good-"
"You fell on stage, Daniel." He pointed out.
"Everyone may feel sick. It happens!" He protested, and I just looked the other way to hide my tears.
"It may happen when you're eighty seven not twenty seven. What is happening is not normal, and you need to help us."
"Help you? Yeah, they are not letting me to walk out of this hell hole! How am I gonna do anything?!" He yelled.
"Daniel, if you want to get out of this hell hole, you should stop yelling first!" Doctor John replied sharply. "Do you think that I like it when you're stuck here? I've been your doctor for over ten years, and I care about my patients more than you can imagine."
"I don't want to do it. You can't force me." He refused stubbornly.
"Daniel, you need to stop." I sighed turning to him. "If you really love me, you have to help us with helping you." "He wants to take my heart out and place another one. Can you imagine that? I could die!" He protested.
"If we will start with statistics, I may tell you that your chance of survival for one more year without making the surgery is just 7%, but if you did it, the percentage will increase to become 88%." Doctor John replied.
"Daniel, you have to do it for me and for Grace. We need you." I whispered.
"When am I going to do it?" He sighed.
"Once we find a donor." Doctor John smiled feeling relieved just like I am.
-----
"What are you doing?" Daniel's quiet voice made me look up.
"I was writing an article, but I finished." I smiled faintly shutting down my laptop.
"Come here." He whispered, and I nodded kneeling by his bed. "Were you crying?" He frowned caressing my cheek.
"What? No!" I looked away blinking back tears.
"I will be okay." He promised pulling me closer to him.
"I know, baby. I know." I whispered snuggling closer to him inhaling his scent.
"Where's Grace?"
"I sent her away with Sophie and Harry. I didn't want her to stay here." I replied quietly.
"Yeah, that's better." He agreed.
"Are you hungry?" I asked as I heard his stomach making those whale sounds.
"A little." He scrunched his nose up with a cute smile.
"I'll tell the nurse to get you something to eat." I smiled getting up.
"Get me something from the cafeteria. I don't like the food they serve me." He suggested.
"Doctor John said that you must eat healthy food. No fats and just a little salt."
"Amber, please." He gave me that puppy dog eyes.
"Okay, I'll get you a bowl of soup and a piece of garlic bread, but you'll have to eat salad first."
"Fine." He rolled his eyes playfully as I walked out.
"Doctor John! I was coming to you." I called out making him stop.
"Is everything okay?"
"Yes, but Daniel is hungry, ans he wants me to get him soup and salad from the cafeteria. Can I do that?"
"Tell the nurse to get him his meal from the hospital kitchen."
"He won't eat it." I sighed.
"Fine, but don't add salt on the salad. They put just enough for a patient."
"Okay, thank you!" I smiled heading to the cafeteria.
-----------
"It smells so good." He grinned trying to sit up once I stepped in.
"Let me help you." I smiled setting the tray on the side table. "Here." I placed a napkin on his chest.
"Let's start with the soup before it gets cold."
"Right." He nodded openning his mouth as I raised the spoon to his lips.
"How are you feeling, now?"
"With you pampering me, I feel like flying." He teased.
"I'd love to pamper you for the last minute of my life."
"Stop saying that. We were just having fun. Stop being dramatic." He frowned.
"You're right. I'm sorry." I shook my head raising the spoon back to his lips.
"Eat with me."
"No, I am not hungry."
"Please," He held my hand making me sigh.
"Okay, but eat this first." I smiled raising the spoon back to his lips.
----------
Stepping out of the room quietly, I closed the door behind me.
"He's asleep. I'll go to the journal and I'll be back in less than an hour." I told Delilah.
"Okay. Drive safe."
"I will." I smiled walking towards Doctor John's office.
"May I get in?" I asked peeking in.
"Sure." He motioned for the chair across of him.
"Isn't there any news about a donor?"
"There isn't, but the reports say that Daniel's state improved about 7% since yesterday. It never happens, but I guess he's lucky." He smiled.
"Oh my God! Thank God!" I giggled.
"But we won't stop searching for a donor though." He reminded.
"Okay. Thank you for everything." I smiled shaking his hand. "I have something to do, and Delilah is staying if you need to ask her about anything. Goodbye." I grinned skipping the stairs.
I really needed some good news.
----------
"Here's my article. It's in this envelope." I handed it to Maria, my colleague.
"Okay." She nodded taking it from me.
"Maria, you have to promise me something..."
"What is it, Amber?" She frowned.
"Don't open it or read it before publishing it."
"But, it must be revised. You know the rules."
"Tell them that you revised it, but don't read it. That's the first time I ask you for a favour." I pleaded.
"What's in it?" She sighed.
"You'll know very soon, I promise you."
"Fine, I won't read it, but if it has something inappropriate..." She trailed off making me giggle.
"I'm not a pervert like you." I shook my head standing up.
"Where are you going?" She frowned.
"I should go back to the hospital. You know, I have to be with Daniel." I sighed.
"How's he doing?" She frowned with concern.
"His state is improving, but very slowly. His life is still in danger." I frowned.
"He'll be fine."
"I know, don't forget your promise." I reminded picking up my bag.
"I won't." She smiled and I walked out and to the car.
Once I stepped into the hospital, I saw that everyone was there. The looks on their faces were undescribable.
"What's wrong?" I whispered.
"Answer me!" I screamed.
"Miss Amber, Daniel's heart stopped two times since you left. We have to find a donor within an hour, or else... we might lose him forever."
