Frodo, Sam, and Gollum walking through woods. "I wonder if we'll ever be put into songs or tales." "What?" Frodo asks, Sam goes on "I wonder if people will ever say, 'Let's hear about Frodo and the Ring.' And they'll say 'Yes, that's one of my favorite stories. Frodo was really courageous, wasn't he, dad.' 'Yes, my boy, the most famousest of hobbits. And that's saying a lot.'" "You left out one of the chief characters. Samwise the Brave. I want to hear more about Sam." Frodo stops to look at Sam. "Frodo wouldn't have got far without Sam.""Now Mister Frodo, you shouldn't make fun. I was being serious." "So was I." "Samwise the Brave." "Sméagol!" Frodo shouts. "We're not gonna wait for you. Come on." Farther away, Sméagol is crawling, fighting with Gollum again.]
Sméagol: "Master - Master looks after us. Master wouldn't hurt us."
Gollum: "Master broke his promise!"
Sméagol: "Don't ask Sméagol. Poor, poor Sméagol."
Gollum: "Master betrayed us! Wicked, tricksy, false! We ought to ring his filthy little neck!"
Gollum: "Kill him! Kill him! Kill them both. Then we take the Precious and we be the master."Sméagol: "But the fat hobbit. He knows. Eyes always watching."
Gollum: "Then we stabs them out. Put out his eyses. And make him crawl."
Sméagol: "Yes! Yes! Yes!"
Gollum: "Kill them both."
Sméagol: "Yes! No. No. It's too risky, it's too risky."
Sam: "Where's he gone? Oi Gollum, where are you?"
"Sméagol!" Frodo shouts out again for the strange creature.
Gollum: "We could let her do it."
Sméagol: "Yes. She could do it."Gollum: "Yes, Precious she could. And then we takes it once they're dead."
Sméagol: "Once they're dead. Hush!"
Gollum comes out from behind a tree.
Sméagol: "Come on, hobbits. Long ways to go yet. Sméagol will show you the way."
Gollum: "Follow me."
The hobbits follow Gollum. It is revealed what lies ahead: Mount Doom and Barad-Dûr, being circled by flying Nazgûl.
Flashback
A worm wriggles in someone's hand. A smiling face looks on. Two Riverfolk sit in a small boat, fishing. One of the fishing poles jerks down. "Sméagol! I've got one! I've got a fish, Sméag!" a rounder hobbit yells out, "Go on! Go on, pull it up!" The fish pulls Déagol out of the boat and into the water. Sméagol looks down but only sees Déagol's hat, floating in the river. Sméagol calls out in fear "Déagol?" Déagol is pulled through the water by the fish. Déagol loses grip on the pole as the fish escapes. He sees a ring and scoops it out of the riverbed.
Déagol returns to land. He pauses, then looks at the ring in his hand. Sméagol approaches. Sméagol shouts "Déagol! Déagol!" They both stare raptly at the ring. "Give us that, Déagol, my love." Déagol closes his hand over the ring. Déagol asks with a strange look "Why?" Sméagol smiles "Because it's my birthday, and I wants it."
Ring: "Ash nazg durbatulûk, ash nazg gimbatul, ash nazg thrakatulûk agh burzum-ishi krimpatul!"
They fight, playfully at first, but then with vigor. Sméagol kills Déagol by strangling him. While holding him down, Sméagol appears momentarily disturbed with what he is doing. Sméagol takes the Ring and smiles.
