Poppy

"Nuggets for me and you," dad said, passing me some nuggets and fries, putting his own down too. He put his arm round me and kissed the top of my head, then picked up some fries and ate them.

Nathan had chosen Mcdonalds, but I hadn't really come here much before, so I felt a bit nervous. I was glad I had dad to keep me company.

Dad was probably one of my best friends. Hopefully I would make some real friends tomorrow when I trialled my class, but up until now, he held one of the spots.

Lots of things had changed lately, and he made it easier for me to keep up; I loved him. I couldn't say it yet, but I did.

"I'm so excited for summer," Nathan said, "No more school work,"

"Is that true?" I asked dad.

"Yeah, but I think we should still practice some maths and handwriting together. Not loads,"

"Okay, that is probably a good idea. I like these nuggets,"

"Good!"

"What else happens in summer? Are you home?"

"Mum and I have to work for a little bit, but then we take a holiday to spend time with everyone for Christmas,"

"So it's just me and all my siblings at home?"

"Well, grandma and grandad are on standby, or even come over some days which is nice,"

"Okay, I will enjoy us all being at home with everyone because it will be like when I first came,"

"Yeah, it will be, but I think you have come a long way since then and I am proud,"

I shrugged and began to eat again, tuning into the other conversation instead. I didn't feel much better because therapy wasn't working and I still couldn't walk, but I couldn't say anything because they had provided me with everything and it would be ungrateful.

Nathan was explaining his new game to Elijah, so I listened to that while we all ate, then we went back home because apparently it was getting chaotic over there .

To avoid it, I went into my bedroom and stretched my legs out, sighing; they were aching a lot today and it made me tired.

"Hey you, did you enjoy lunch?" Jasper asked, slipping into the room, "It's so loud out there,"

"Yeah,"

"Your legs are aching?"

I nodded and he left again, bringing me back some medicine to take.

"Thank you,"

"You're welcome. Mind if I stay here with you?"

"No, it's okay. I might nap,"

"Me too,"

"Sorry if I wake you up,"

"You're alright, I'm not a light sleeper,"

I still shared with Elijah, but Cameron really wanted to share with me. He shared with Jasper right now. Lauren and Payton were together, then Bailey and Nathan- it worked pretty well.

My room was the smallest, but I had to be downstairs. It was hard though now, I had lots of new things and Elijah and I were a bit squished.

"Poppy?"

"Mhm,"

"You gotta close your eyes to sleep,"

I turned over onto my front and pulled on my sleeping mask, then pulled my duvet over my ear and fell into a nap.
