Poppy

A cold hand touched my face and I woke up, dad staring down at me.

"Hey," he whispered, "Mum and I are going now, but I will pick you up later if you send me the address. Have fun,"

"Do I need to get ready?"

"Not yet, pack a bag and get dressed at 9:30,"

I nodded and he tucked me back into bed, kissing my head before leaving, shutting the door again.

Although I loved dad, and was happy to know he had left for work, I was terrible at falling back to sleep, and with the addition of nerves, I was extremely awake.

I got out of bed and went to the toilet, then got my phone, put on a sweatshirt, and quietly opened the back door, sitting on one of the outside chairs.

Everything was still so still, and I liked it. I never got to see this time of day still.

"Poppy?"

I turned and saw Jasper with a cup of coffee, watching him sit beside me.

"I thought I heard someone,"

"Why are you up?" I asked.

"I have work. You?"

"Dad had work,"

He chuckled and nodded, putting the mug down on the table. It was dad's favourite mug, it had footballs on, but I suddenly realised that it had a faint 'J' on the side that had worn off over the years. It was Jasper's mug before dad's.

"I'm going to my friend's house,"

"So I heard, I hope you have fun. I'm at work all day but I will try and answer you if you need,"

"Thank you. Have you heard from university yet?"

"No, but hopefully soon. Dad was telling me you did very well at school,"

"Maybe, I don't know much," I said, "Hi Cameron,"

He came out and sat on Jasper's lap then smiled- his smile always comforted me because Cameron's smile was always genuine.

"Good morning. It is summer so we can share rooms,"

"Wow, my eviction notice just got delivered," Jasper teased, "Well, I guess Elijah's,"

He finished his coffee and put Cameron down on the seat, ruffling his hair before heading back inside.

"You still want to share, don't you?"

"Maybe ,"

"Please ," he said, "I'm sad you're not home today, you're always home,"

"No I'm not, I have school and physio,"

"But apart from that,"

"Oh. Yeah. Well I am excited,"

He yawned and rested his head on the table, his eyes drooping shut again.

Cameron had been a very good brother to me; he always helped, he let me play, and he didn't even act like I was any different. We did our nails together, and sometimes put makeup on each other- we did lots together but mum and dad said we weren't allowed to share a room permanently. Or at least we had to prove it would work.

We both went back inside and he laid on the sofa, falling back to sleep, so I watched some tv on the ipad with headphones so he didn't wake up.

Jasper slipped out the house to work, and not long later, everyone else began to wake up.
