On the art of mapmaking, compass reading, appreciating the dust motes,
and finding the words to be brave.

AN: Hello everyone!

This week's update is brought to you by caffeine and ugly crying over Ed Sheeran's new album so hard you gag. <3 (JOKING.) (Mostly.) (I need to go to bed, probably.)

First: Thank you so, so much for being patience with the extended editing schedule on this one. I really wanted to make sure I got it right, though. <3 We're going to pretend it's not nearly time to wake up on Thursday, and tentatively schedule the next update for the Monday after next. (We'll be kind to ourselves, though, and recognize that it might be a bit late, considering. I'm going to push myself, though, because it's Nano-wrimo, and I'm counting words from this.)

ALSO: Thank you so, so much for the encouragement and kindness on the last chapter. Thank you so much for taking the time to read and for being so lovely. I hope you all have a wonderful holiday and that your November has been excellent thusfar.

As always, I do not own the rights to this story world or to these characters.

Alright! Grab your snack (something pumpkin-y, maybe), your drink (It's getting colder, so a strong cuppa might be nice), and your fuzzy socks. Let's dive in. <3<3<3

Chapter Fifty-Two:"Wayfinder"

George

March 5, 1999, 8:15 p.m.

When George was young, pink was the hue of sunrise and strawberry stains on Mum's good linen tablecloth. It was sometimes an Every Flavor Bean, or a ball of wool yarn trailed over the Burrow's creakiest armchair. For the last month in particular, pink had become the color of Granger's soft lips, or the tint of her intriguing flush, or the muted shade of the frayed, hooded jacket she wore from time to time.

But that was not the sort of pink that George thought of as he stared at those etched, jagged letters.

Because pink could hurt, too.

After all, pink was the last thing seen, just before the dark of night. Like an omen. A warning that the coldest time was incoming.

He mouthed the name under his breath, heart slamming into his ribs.

"Dolores Umbridge"

And George's world became pink.

Pink like grinding his palms into his eye sockets under a harsh lamp after too many all-nighters. Pink like the mark left, after one's been struck. Pink like blood wisping into a bowl of Murtlap essence around Fred's left hand. Pink like the titter of decorum and the claws of corrupted fury.
