"Hey, babe." Calvin answered the call after the second ring, sounding relieved. Taylor slightly frowned. She knew that he was probably anxious to talk to her, considering the voicemails he left her. But she didn't think that he'd answer right away. It actually annoyed her even more. It annoyed her that he texted her "question marks", called her back to back, left so many voicemails because he messed up. He didn't do this all of the times she left abruptly when they argued, when he called himself being worried about her. So, why now?
"Hi." Plainly, masking her annoyance, she replied.
"How are you?" He genuinely asked. His voice laced with passion and concern. It was new! Taylor has never heard him sound so concerned, but even still, it didn't phase her. She didn't care that he all of a sudden so concerned with her state of mind and well being. She was still highly upset that had broken a promise for the sixth time in the six years they spent together. He knew very well why these trips needed to happen and why she couldn't just opt of them. He was far too selfish to care. She wanted nothing more than to be supported the way she supports him, even when she doesn't understand or agree with him.
"I'm fine. How are you?" Not caring at all, she asked. The only reason why she didn't care because she was mad at him. It kind of scared her because there have been times when she was mad at him but still made sure that he was alright. But now? It was different and she didn't quite understand why that was.
"I'm okay. It feels really good to hear your voice." Happily he told her. Taylor remained silent as her face was blank with confusion. She didn't understand why he was happy when he knew for a fact that she was mad at him. What was there to be happy about? Her voice that he's heard a million times before? The voice that woke him up in the morning? Why was her voice so special now, she wondered.
"Babe?" He called. "Are you there?"
"Yeah, I'm here." Simply, she replied.
"Did you hear what I said?"
"I heard you. I just don't know what I'm supposed to say to that."
Calvin sighed quietly. "I️ guess there's nothing that you can say, really."
"Why are you happy to hear my voice? Like you haven't heard it before...?" She asked with furrowed eyebrows as if he could see her face.
"Because we haven't talked, at all. You weren't answering my calls, calling me back or replying to my texts. I know you read them. It scared me. You-"
"Scared you? Why? Did you forget that I'm mad at you, Calvin?"
"No, I didn't forget. I was reminded of that every time I called and you didn't answer. I fucked up, babe. I realized that more each time I tried to reach out to you. I haven't been the best fiancé to you, and I'm sorry." He sincerely apologized and the frown on her face slowly faded. Taylor didn't feel like his last statement was entirely true. Yes, he broke promises and admitted to wanting to be with his family instead of her during these trips. Other than that, he's been nothing but great to her. Calvin gave her just about everything she asked for. Whether it was emotionally, mentally, spiritually, he gave it to her. Even when she pissed him off, he gave it into her. Of course, there were areas that needed improvement but that's not uncommon. There's no such thing as a perfect human being, definitely not in relationships.
Calvin felt like he wasn't the best fiancé and it crushed Taylor's heart. He was better to her than she was to him, especially during this business trip. While he was texting her, calling her, and leaving voicemails, she allowed her assistant to have her body. While he was worried about the state of their relationship, her assistant made her body feel unfamiliar sensations. To make matters worse, she didn't use condoms. Neither of them thought about being smart and safe. For the first time, she had unprotected sex and it wasn't with her fiancé. And because of that, she had to take a plan B pill.
