POV: Rex
*Note: 30 years later, Queen Roseis took the throne at age 19 years old and 9 months.*
A brown Bengal tiger with navy blue eyes was bored out of his mind as he listened to his teacher's lecture. Rex listened to the birds gossiping as the Silverback Gorilla named Felis droned on about the Laws of the Island. The Island known as Panthera Regina was strict for its laws as it meant to maintain peace with the tribes. However, the 85-year old ape didn't make it more exciting to learn, and he didn't make it fun, or at least in Rex's opinion.
Rex wanted to leave more than anything but couldn't. The brown tiger with striking blue eyes was a firstborn Prince of the Royal family. He didn't have a choice but to stay. There was also another problem. He had 11 siblings who had the right to claim the throne. Rex wanted to become King then he needed to earn the respect of the creatures.
It was harder to find a suitable heir as none of Roseis's 12 cubs had been given gifts from the Stars of Fate. So, it was a race to earn the right to be called an heir. However, it wasn't as chaotic as some creatures would like to believe. Everyone pretty much got along. The only problem he had was that he was the only one of his siblings that weren't considered special. He was considered different.
It all started about 17 years ago, 3 months after Queen Roseis took the throne. Alba Men had invaded the island somewhere from very far out in the ocean. No one knew why the Great Beast didn't stop the ship from making land, but it did. Long story short, his mother was captured with other animals from the island to have experimented. The Alba men even bought animals from their country for this experiment.
However, Roseis did manage to escape thanks to a Giant Panda named Bamboo that came with the Alba Men. However, it was too late. The Alba Men gave her DNA with all the big cats that allowed her to have the abilities of every cat. This trait is passed down to her offspring. However, Rex was born before this happened. So, he was the only one that was normal.
However, this led to a multitude of rumors about Rex. Many of them center around that he was adopted and shouldn't even inherit the throne. As a result, he had to work harder in every task he was given to prove to everyone that he was the next true king. This didn't help but only seemed to make things worse for him.
"So, who do you support?" A robin said above him in the trees, in her language.
Rex had a talent for understanding the languages of different creatures. He only knew of his mother, like he could understand many birds' tongues. He found it ionic that Felis couldn't speak more than five languages. That is just a sad excuse of a teacher if Rex ever heard of it. He couldn't even figure out how he became a teacher. However, Rex couldn't help but listen to the gossip of the robins and he had a feeling that they knew he understood them.
"I think Regina would make a good queen. She is calm, polite, and unlike the falsus prince that keeps claiming he is related to the Queen." The other Robin replied in a snarky tone, even having a nerve to side glance to Rex below her.
Rex's blood was beginning to boil but knew he had to keep quiet as he got into trouble the last time after interrupting the lesson for attacking the annoying birds. However, last time, the birds were Red-Tailed Hawks. They claimed they did nothing wrong, and Felis believed him. Lucky for him, his mother spoke hawk and took her son's word for it. However, since she wasn't present at the time, she still had to punish Rex for attacking the Red-Tailed Hawks.
He felt the robin's eyes staring down at him. The grass was warm, but the dirt was cold as he tried to grab at the dirt with his claws to keep himself calm. Rex knew this talent for communicating was common knowledge among the birds. He couldn't blame them, he understood at least 50 tongues. Mastering the common (Latin) language at a very young age. Rex was able to master many of the feline species, goat, robin, hawk, hyena, deer, wolf, and mouse. However, he couldn't quite get the hang of aquatic animals' languages because getting an aquatic tongue tutor was too difficult to get this far inland.
