𝐆𝐎𝐃'𝐒 𝐂𝐎𝐔𝐍𝐓𝐑𝐘 — 𝐃𝐀𝐑𝐘𝐋 𝐃𝐈𝐗𝐎𝐍
❝ sophia ❞warning: description of death and suicide
She hadn't realized how much her brother was slipping until the barn.
He wasn't himself anymore, and it scared her. He looked like a man on the brink, holding himself like someone who was at war with the world. And she supposed he was, they all were, but there were lines, things off-limits even now.
He crossed one of the lines when he handed Carl a gun.
"Hershel, he's just gonna have to understand." Her brother began, his eyes trained on the barn. He pivoted quickly, walking towards her godson. He crouched down, taking the small pistol from his waistband. He placed it in Carl's hands, forcing the boy to wrap his fingers around the handle. "I want you to take this. You take it, Carl, and you keep your mother safe. You do whatever it takes."
Madeline rushed forward, pushing her body between the two of them, hiding Carl behind her back. Her brother looked up at her, and she almost didn't recognize him. Even his eyes were different, and it scared her. She held his stare, standing her ground. Carl handed her the gun in her outstretched hand, and she tucked it protectively in her belt.
"Rick said no guns. This is not your call." Lori hissed, right beside Madeline. "This is not your decision to make. You will get us kicked out tonight."
Madeline's concentration was broken by the sounds of growls. Shane stood up, picking his rifle up from the grass. Madeline squinted against the sun, only to see Rick and Hershel break through the tree line with Walkers on leads. Shane cursed loudly, sprinting off towards the two men. "What the hell are you doing?"
"Shane, back off!" Rick snapped, having difficulty holding his Walker at arm's length. Madeline felt sick, seeing those things snapping and growling. Even after months of living in this world, she still hadn't gotten used to them.
Shane wouldn't stop screaming, and it was getting harder for Madeline to breathe. Gunshots rang through the once peaceful air, making her jump. He continued his rant, shooting more and more shots into the Walker Hershel held onto, until finally, he ended it with a headshot.
Hershel fell to the ground along with the Walker. His daughters rushed towards him, rubbing his back and protecting their father from her brother. The group screamed at him, begging him to stop.
Issac pushed her behind him when Shane ripped the barn doors open, but she steeled her back. Her kin, her brother was the one ruining their chances at protection, a sense of normalcy, that it felt wrong to just stand aside and act like she was the victim. She wasn't, he wasn't, Shane wasn't.
