Madeline Walsh hadn't spoken nor seen her eldest brother for two years the day Lori Grimes gave birth.

Rick had called her, his voice light and full of newfound joy. He had always been so reserved before Lori, so distant that sometimes even Shane couldn't get through to him. Madeline decided then that she liked this Rick, who's happiness radiated even though her cell. He called and all but demanded she come to the hospital to meet her nephew.

     Nephew.

She had met Lori in sophomore year of high school. The crisp Autumn air was just beginning to get its bite. The two girls were lab partners in Chemistry, and at first they didn't get along. Madeline was the awkward late-bloomer just beginning to find herself, while Lori was the co-captain of the Varsity Cheer squad, with a cocky, innocent smile that won anyone over. After her asshole of a boyfriend dumped her the week before Homecoming, Madeline had offered for her to tag along with her and Issac, who was a senior at the time.

Now she's married and holding her firstborn son.

Madeline's eyes welded up with tears, her feet dragging her to the side of Lori's bed. The new mom was smiling, exhausted. Tentatively, and with a shaking hand, Madeline reached out, touching the newborn's thick black hair. He stirred slightly, but settled down, smiling softly in his sleep.

"He's beautiful, Lori," she said in a whisper.

"Would you like to hold him?" Her best friend asked. Madeline nodded rapidly, gently taking the newborn out of her hands. She swayed slightly, smiling so wide it felt like her cheeks would rip open. "His name is Carl Sawyer Grimes."

"He's perfect, Lori." Madeline was at a loss for words. Her best friend, the first one of their group to have a husband and a kid to boot. She wanted that, she wanted that so bad. She'd never loved someone enough to think of a diamond ring, let alone a mini version of them. So this would have to do for now, this beautiful baby boy would be it for her for a while.

"Hey Carl, aren't you the cutest ever." She whispered, laughing softly as she looked at the two new parents. Rick smiled brightly, kissing his wife's head. He excused himself after that, saying he needed to call the chief and tell him the news. "I'm gonna spoil you so damn much, but don't tell your mom because she'd ruin our fun."

"Quit indoctrinating my kid to hate me already, I just pushed him out, give me a few years." Lori snapped playfully, eating a jello cup a nurse had brought her. "I gotta ask you something, but you can't get weird about it." Lori's voice dropped its playfulness, suddenly serious,

"What's up, Lori? Is something wrong? Do you need a nurse?" Lori shook her head, sitting up so she was face to face with Madeline. "I love you but I don't know if I can look at your stitches."
