Growing up, Daryl Dixon didn't have much of a family.

Once his mother died and his father was as good as dead, it had just been him and Merle. His grandmother would visit often to either bring groceries or leave money, but she never stayed. Then once she died and Merle went to juvy for the fifth time, it was just Daryl.

He had gotten used to it after a while. The coming and going of people in his life like a revolving door stopped bothering him, and pretty soon he found himself actually looking forward to Merle's next stint behind bars.

But when the dead started walking and Merle came home with stories of the military shooting people up in cold blood, Daryl had thought rather selfishly that maybe this would whip his brother into shape. Make him stick around for a good while. And once they hooked up with the group at the Quarry, Daryl finally felt like they had it made.

But then, like he always had, Merle left him. He died, most likely from blood loss or a Walker. He was gone and all that was left of him was a single limb that Daryl had buried alongside Amy and the others.

Soon after, Daryl began to move on, the pain in his chest growing duller and duller the more the days passed by. He found himself growing closer to each member of the group, making a man out of himself he had never thought possible. He had come to terms with Merle's death, instead focusing on keeping the people around him safe.

But that didn't stop him from still holding out a shred of hope that maybe, just maybe his brother was alive.

So maybe that was why Glenn's words had stopped him in his tracks, knocking the wind out of him as he staggered back into the wall of cabinets. He had hoped for so long that he would be reunited with his blood, but now that he could it was overshadowed by what he had done to the people Daryl loved.

Daryl could barely stomach looking at Glenn and Maggie, nor the empty space beside them, knowing that his brother had been the one to hurt them. He steeled his back as Rick began talking about moving out, shaking his head.

"If Merle's around, I need to see him." Daryl choked out, his voice right.

"Not now. We're in hostile territory." Rick shook his head, his voice low.

"He's my brother. I ain't—" Daryl tried to continue, only to be cut off.

"Look at what he did!" Rick scoffed, pointing at Glenn. Daryl dropped his head like a wounded animal, his shoulders tensing up as their leader took a deep breath. "Look, we gotta get out of here now."
