Madeline found him keeping watch on top of the bus.

She lifted herself onto the overturned vehicle, grunting as she lifted the weight of her body. He turned at the sound, and upon seeing it was just her he took a step forward, grabbing her hand to help her the rest of the way.

It was a chilly night, far colder than it had been the past week. She had her blanket wrapped securely around her shoulders once she was gotten to her feet and yet she still shivered as she stood beside him.

She looked out into the darkness, sighing as she heard the distant groans of the monsters beyond the fence. He walked around her, obviously restless as he paced. She grabbed a bundle from her jacket pocket, grabbing his wrist as he went past her.

"Here, I know it isn't much but I knew you weren't gonna eat if I didn't bring you some." She opened the cloth she had covered it in, revealing an assortment of meat and cooked vegetables. He grabbed a few pieces from her hand, nudging it as he went.

"Have some too." He said as he shoved the meat into his mouth.

"I already ate." He made a noise that didn't sound convinced, casting a look over his shoulder.

"Yeah, sure. I guess little Shane over there has got quite the appetite." He said without thinking, watching as she tensed slightly. Shit. Daryl cursed himself, still too used to before. He couldn't help but wonder if he would ever not fuck up around her.

She recovered quickly, though, letting out a soft laugh. "Don't be mean." She hushed, swatting at his arm as he attempted to dodge her. "You should have seen her when she was pregnant with Carl. Now that was an appetite!" She chuckled, earning a scoff from the man beside her. "Rick's done alright by you guys? Over the winter, I mean." She asked suddenly, jerking her head to the group who sat in the distance.

"Mm-hmm." He made a sound of agreement, finishing up the food she had brought him. "It was a rough winter though, but he did the best he could." They fell into a lapse of silence as they stared off into their surroundings.

She still hadn't really processed what he had told her that morning. It had shocked her, confused that Rick would do something so cruel. She told herself that it was just because he was grieving himself, both for his best friend and for so many members of his group. It comforted her, though, to know that the group hadn't stopped looking for her, that he hadn't stopped looking.

"You did a good job today." Daryl spoke suddenly, voice cutting through the peaceful silence of the night. She thanked him, tightening her hold on her blanket. "Rick wants to push into the courtyard tomorrow, maybe further into one of the cell blocks if it's not too bad."
