There was a sadness that enveloped the group in the night.

As the chill grew bitter and the sun ran away from them, they all begged for an ounce of warmth. They spent the winter running in circles, only stopping as the night settled among them. They would sleep sometimes, but most night they would all just stare up at the ceilings of their tents or the rooms in the house they had claimed.

Their dreams were plagued by their memories and the creation of new ones out of the carnage of their pasts. It took less of a toll to just lie awake and think, because at least then they had some control over the memories brought to the surface.

Then, as the sun run rose above the horizon and the frost that coated the grass sparkled, they steeled their backs and pressed on. They were in search of so much more than a place to stay, so much more than just a sense of safety.

They had made it far enough away from the farm that they could no longer feel the nagging loss or smell the rotting sense of peace they had felt there. None of them talked about it much, knowing that if they did they would each have to confront the parts of themselves they had lost there.

And Daryl wasn't ready for that.

So instead, he just pushed all those words he wanted to scream securely behind the walls that protected him. Instead, he just watched as the group tried desperately to heal and move on. Instead, he focused on the members of the group he couldn't afford to lose, because if he did he would lose all that was left of her.

And there was a part of him, one that he continually tried to beat down and ignore, that hoped that when he found her, she would thank him for taking care of them. That it would serve as penance for all the mistakes he had made. Not just at the farm, but for all of them that had made her weary of him.

He would be a better man, one that didn't run away when things got hard or take the easy way out. The type of man that he had so desperately needed when he was Carl's age. He would be that man, so that when she came back into his life he could do better by her.

If not only for her, than for himself too.

The rumble of his bike calmed him, easing his racing heart as he sped down wet road. They had just gotten a heavy rain the night before, which had ruined some of their supplies they had forgotten to tuck away in one of the cars before they all retreated into their tents.

He had been sent to the nearest down to replenish the supplies they had lost while the rest of the group worked on digging their cars out of the mud. Even though the rain had come unexpectedly, the sun once again shined brightly above him, chasing away the dark clouds further and further into the distance.
