Daryl found her outside, sharpening her knives in the bed of Hershel's old truck. She was humming, her feet tucked under her thighs. Maggie and Glenn milled around her, too deep in their little conversation to notice the daggers he was shooting at them.
He came to a stop in front of her, blocking the sun with his tall frame. She looked up, squinting as she smiled "Hey!" She said, putting one of her knives back in her holster before grabbing another out.
"A run, huh? When were you gonna let anyone know?" He asked, confusing her as she picked up on the slight anger in his voice. She sat up straighter, furrowing her brows at his tone.
"I told Rick." She said simply.
"No one told me." He countered. "I've been looking everywhere for you."
"Yeah, well, you found me." She huffed, looking back down at her knives. There was a silence for a moment before he scoffed, shaking his head. "There something else you wanted to say, Dixon?"
"Oh don't give me that shit, Mads." He rolled his eyes, adjusting his crossbow on his shoulder. "I thought you were gonna sit out of runs for a while, at least till Rick got back on his feet." He reminded.
"I did. Rick's back." Madeline countered, cocking her head slightly to look up at him.
"Yeah, for five minutes." He scoffed.
"I'm not gonna sit suicide watch while he holds his damn daughter, Daryl. Plus, it's a quick formula run, not that I need to explain myself." Madeline sighed. She made huffed like she was finished, but then she was spurred forward, leaning towards him as she gritted her teeth. "And at least I'm not going alone, like someone I know. Double standard much?" She scoffed, rolling her eyes as he stared at her. She could tell he was trying to think of something to say that could defuse the ticking time bomb he had accidentally pulled the pin on.
He cursed himself for coming on too strong, for being so blinded by his fears and his hesitance. When he was around her, surrounded by her smell and her warmth, he forgot how to breathe, how to act. He had never been good with people, let alone women. He felt socially inept, like no matter what he said it wouldn't be good enough. And when it was her— all bets were off.
"Alright, I deserved that." He settled on after several moments of tense silence, dropping his head as his cheeks flushed.
"You think?" She asked, raising a brow. "We'll be two hours, three tops if we run into any trouble." She shrugged.
"You better not." He scoffed, crossing his arms over his chest. She snorted, shaking her head.
"You're a real piece of work, Daryl, you know that?" She asked as she slid off the truck bed, landing on her feet. She looked up at him, squinting against the warm springtime sun. "There and back, I promise." She said, walking off towards her pack that sat discarded by the cage. He caught up quickly with her, picking it up before she could.
