𝐆𝐎𝐃'𝐒 𝐂𝐎𝐔𝐍𝐓𝐑𝐘 — 𝐃𝐀𝐑𝐘𝐋 𝐃𝐈𝐗𝐎𝐍
❝ little ass-kicker ❞Daryl Dixon hated silence.
There had been a time where he had craved it, craved the comfort it gave him and the loneliness it provided. He had liked how it meant no one was watching him, meaning he could let down his walls and not worry about the things that might claw their way out of them. The anger, the sadness, other emotions he had been taught to be ashamed of.
But now, all silence meant was grief. Silence meant another cell that would remain empty and another body they had to bury. It meant noticing the hallow look in the eyes of the people around him and hoping, begging they didn't notice it in his.
He couldn't handle it. He couldn't just sit in it and wait for it to suffocate him. Not when there was so much to do and so many people he had to protect.
He was the only one in the common area, everyone else still locked away in their cells or outside, pretending things were normal. Like they hadn't just lost so much of themselves. Like they weren't being bled dry.
He found himself unzipping one of the duffels they had set aside for the baby, his heart heavy. His hands trembled as they reached into the pack, pulling the stuffed dog off of the top. He stared at it, his eyes glassy with tears as he remembered how happy Lori had looked. How she had held it to her belly as if to say Look at what you got.
He sighed, tucking the dog into his pocket the same way he had all those weeks ago. He then pulled out a bottle and a small canister of formula, looking over his shoulder.
Weren't babies supposed to eat every few hours?
He tried not to think of how empty the formula can was, instead just focusing on not spilling the fine powder. He looked into the bag once more, pulling out a the smallest onesie and diaper he could find before pushing it away from him. He still remembered the day Maggie and Carol began the bag, announcing it over supper. Since then it had represented almost a glimmer of hope for the group, but now all it did was make him want to scream.
He turned away from the duffel, leaving it lie open on the table. He left the room without another word, still shaking the bottle absentmindedly. He took the steps two at a time, picking up his pace until he fell to a dead stop outside her cell door. It was cracked, but the sheet she had hung up was rolled down. He couldn't hear any movement, and there was a part of him that wanted to give up and walk away, put everything away and just go back to his cell. But he couldn't, he wouldn't.
"Madeline." He whispered, reaching his hand out tentatively. When he heard no answer he took a small step forward, pushing the sheet over slightly, just enough for him to peak in. His eyes found her form easily, her knees propped up so she could place the bundle of blankets onto her thighs. He opened his mouth to call out her name again, but stopped once he noticed her eyes slightly shift towards the light that streamed in through the door.
