As time passed by, Madeline regretted not going with them. The pit in her stomach grew bigger and bigger, her handles clammy as they held the playing cards. Carl sat across from her, a smirk on his face as he threw down his cards.

"Straight flush." He said, moving the cards so she could see them all. She shook her head, throwing her own down to show him. The boy laughed, slapping the table as he got to his feet.

"Who taught you how to play poker?" Madeline questioned, furrowing her brows at the boy, but he ignored her. He only continued fanning himself off as if he was hot. She went to laugh, but stopped short as her ears pricked up at the distant sound of screaming. "Carl... Carl, bud, go to your mom." She said as the yells got louder. The boy stopped in his tracks, looking at her with a confused expression until his ears too caught the yells.

"Maddie—" Carl began to say, but she shook her head, snapping her fingers towards the opening to the cell block. The boy just nodded, grabbing his gun off the table before jogging into the adjacent room. She watched as he closed the barred door leading to their cells, and once he was out of sight she stood from her seat.

"Madeline! Open the door!" Rick's voice broke through the hall, echoing in her ears. She cursed, running forward with her key set. She fumbled slightly, but finally threw open the door as they came within sight. "Move, move! It's Hershel!"

"Oh my god!" She nearly screamed as they flew through the threshold, Hershel's limb body hanging off a metal table. His left leg was gone, completely amputated just below the knee. "Carl! Get my supplies! Quickly!"

The room was in a huge commotion, everyone yelling and begging for answers as to what was going to happen. She ran, following the group into one of the still empty cells. Once they got him onto the cot she pushed her way to the front, immediately getting to work.

"What the fuck happened in there, Grimes?" She hissed, moving Hershel's leg slightly to get a better look at the cut.

"He was bit." Rick grunted.

"Oh, my God! He's gonna turn." Beth cried, burying her head into Maggie's shoulder. Both daughters cried, begging for their father to open his eyes. He laid still, his body overwhelmed form the pain. He was breathing, though, his breaths labored and slow.

"You cut it off?" Madeline asked, wrapping Hershel's leg in a thick towel. She also shoved a bunch of other towels under it, elevating it to slow the blood flow. The man nodded, his hands covered in blood and shaking. "Maybe you got it in time, then. The tissue and bone looked normal, unaffected."
