𝐆𝐎𝐃'𝐒 𝐂𝐎𝐔𝐍𝐓𝐑𝐘 — 𝐃𝐀𝐑𝐘𝐋 𝐃𝐈𝐗𝐎𝐍
❝ for a moment ❞Madeline woke up to an eerie silence.
She groaned as she pushed herself up from her cot, rubbing at her eyes. Her room was bright, and as she squinted out of the crack aside the sheet she would guess it was well into the morning. She climbed up to her feet, shaking out of the tightness of her limbs as she shuffled over to Judith's crib.
She furrowed her brows as she saw nothing but the wrinkled sheets, a pacifier thrown into the corner. She smiled softly as she grabbed it, straightening the sheets as she went.
She pattered down the cell block steps a moment later, rubbing the soother over the fabric of her shirt as she entered the common area. There were only a few people scattered about the room, Judith still no where to be seen. Carol pushed forward, though, handing her a bowl of grits with a cheerful smile.
"Morning," Madeline said offhandedly, still looking around the room as if the infant would suddenly show up. "Where's Judith?" She asked after moment, swallowing the warm grits with a slight grimace.
"Out with Daryl. He's in the tower." Carol answered, shuffling back toward the stove top to switch off the warmer. Madeline nodded, waving to everyone else as she made her way outside.
She squinted against the harsh light of the sun, smiling as she noticed there wasn't a single cloud in the sky.
As she climbed up the ladder leading to the top of the guard tower, she could hear soft cooing and the sound of muttering. She pushed herself up onto the floor, dusting off her pant legs as she righted herself onto her feet.
Sitting there, in the lawn chairs they had moved up there, were the Dixon brothers, rifles leaned lazily against the railing. Judith laid in a bouncer, cooing as Daryl's foot lazily pushed it. The two brother had yet to notice the women, too immersed in whatever story Merle was muttering. He laughed loudly, slapping his thigh as he looked over his shoulder. He jumped as he did so, cursing. Daryl's head snapped around next, eyes wide and on alert, though they calmed almost immediately.
"I almost started putting up flyers," Madeline sighed jokingly, rubbing her forehead in faux frustration. "I didn't even hear you come in and grab her; why didn't you wake me?" She asked, leaning against the railing closest to the younger brother. He shrugged, his eyes going between Judith and her as the former began to fuss.
"Thought you could use the sleep," he responded nonchalantly. "She woke up around six, and I was already up doing my rounds." He tried to justify, his cheeks slightly red as he felt her eyes on him.
