02. Professor abernathy

CHAPTER TWO
PROFESSOR ABERNATHY

BUNNY HAD AVOIDED AUGUSTINE ONCE THEY ARRIVED AT HOGWARTS. Opting to stay besides Abraxas as they walked in, whilst Augustine and Juno went in behind them.

A perfect view of Bunny's muscled back, Augustine could've stabbed him right here, right now. He smiled, if Bunny could backstab him, it was only right he could backstab him back — however, physically, this time.

Juno's blonde ringlets swished about as she surveyed the great hall, looking for her table. When she caught sight of Flick, whom had hurried off first after a light peck on the cheek to Theo, and turned to Augustine, "don't be a stranger, study with me Monday?"

"Sure," he replied with a nod, feeling not at all that begrudging as he normally would have.

She smiled her big smile, like a child's smile, having never been taught how to properly smile, before disappearing towards the sapphire robed table.

Once she left, Augustine dodged smaller years in favour of walking towards the Slytherin table.

Sitting besides Tom, and unfortunately opposite Bunny, he kept his eyes on Theo, who was profusely talking about his two weeks in Bulgaria.

"Did you manage to learn any Bulgarian?" Augustine asked raising a brow in interest.

Theo shook his head softly, "nope, they had to communicate with me through one of our servants! How annoying!"

"Maybe if you actually learnt how to speak Bulgarian instead of learning swear words this wouldn't have happened," Tom butted in sternly with a shrug.

"But swear words are the best part!" Theo complained loudly.

Bunny laughed, "i learned the swears first when I learned Irish,"

"You know Irish?" Augustine asked suddenly. He knew he wasn't meant to be speaking to Bunny, but Bunny barely knew English, so knowing another language was a complete surprise.

"Of course," Bunny said quite stiffly, his eyes boring into his own. Augustine knew the look well, anger.

"My family are from there," he added before avoiding Augustine's eyes in favour of the introduction of Headmaster Dippet.

They quieted down once he entered the great hall, the decorated robe Dippet wore made Augustine think of him as a muggle Christmas tree.

"I hope you all had a happy and safe holiday," he started and all Augustine could do was smile, looking across the tables to where Olive Hornby sat.

Her mouth shut staring aimlessly at the front. She looked pretty, with her long hair and big eyes.

She was even prettier now with no tongue.

"As you can see, we have a new professor with us this year, so please welcome Professor Abernathy!"

Students started to murmur as they craned their necks to look at the new professor. Thankfully where Augustine sat, he had a clear view of him.

A tall, fairly handsome man stood up. Blonde curls and a neat face. He looked like he'd never seen evil in his life, why did he think he could be the DADA teacher?

He gave a smile, "thank you for the introduction," his tone was educated and light.

"As Headmaster Dippet has said, I'm Professor Abernathy, I'll be teaching you Defense against the dark arts this year," he continued.

Augustine turned to Tom, "doesn't look like much," he muttered.

Tom shook his head in agreement.

....

After dinner they headed down towards the Slytherin common room.

Surprisingly, Abraxas walked alongside Augustine.

As the rest walk off in front of them, leaving the two alone, Abraxas spoke, "have fun on your trip?"

The tone didn't indicate any jealousy, it was more interested than anything.

"Why do you care?" Augustine asked calmly turning his head to the blonde.

After returning to Hogwarts, there was something that had changed within Augustine. A newfound confidence.

Abraxas' normal smug facade broke for a moment, to reveal shock, before he covered it up with a shrug, "it was meant to be my week, I was just wondering what I'd missed out on."

"Nothing," Augustine lied, "absolutely nothing."
