CHAPTER NINE
MOTHERS AND SONS

THE NEXT MORNING AUGUSTINE ROSE TO THE SOUNDS OF SOFT SNORING ALL AROUND. Somehow, he'd woken before any of the other Knights. So, he trudged to the bathroom and inspected his face as he managed to stay awake. Pulling at his face, he sighed.

Growing up, adults would tell Augustine how much he looked like his mother; they shared the same high cheekbones and gaunt eyes which Augustine always found ugly on him, but they made his mother look powerful. He also shared her dark hair. He shared nothing with his father but his last name.

He would smile when these adults would tell him this, but the smile would drop once he saw his mothers grin. His mother was a prideful woman who hated his father for marrying her, ridding her of her maiden name.

The fact that both Augustine and his brother Vincent shared her features was a win in her eyes. A powerful win that must've burned bright within her. He wondered if that was where Augustine had gotten his own prideful characteristics from.

He didn't like to admit it, but Augustine was more his mother than anyone. Vincent shared some qualities, but favoured their fathers personality. Vincent was sociable and cracked jokes. Augustine could never manage to make someone laugh without it feeling awkward.

His mother was the same. She was cold and unsettling to others; her presence, as she stood besides her talkative husband, made those who didn't know her very well scared of her.

But she never warmed up, however close you got to her, her heart was still ice.

He blinked away the thought of his mother before turning away from the bathroom, maybe it was the lack of sleep that caused these thoughts to arise, so maybe going back to the world of slumber would help.

Unfortunately for him, he awoke an hour later by the sounds of Bunny yelling at the top of his lungs. He rolled over in his bed, wrapping his pillow around his ears to drown him out.

"It's here! It's here!" Bunny exclaimed loudly.

Augustine groaned, tightening the pillow around his ears even more, but unfortunately, Bunny could out-yell anything, so Augustine ripped open his curtains to look, realising that he'd never be able to drown him out.

As he opened the curtains, he saw that the rest of the Knights looked how Augustine felt; rough. Bunny must've woken them all up. They all sported dark eye bags and ruffled hair.

Then he looked at Bunny, who was holding a large plastic bag, obviously inside was a coat hanger with a suit inside.

"My celestial ball suit!" He spoke, shoving the bag into everyone's faces. Abraxas squinted and rubbed his eyes.

"It looks hideous." He finally spoke blinking at the bag.

"Well yeah, it's in a bag stupid." Bunny replied madly, his excitement deflated.

"I'm sure it's lovely Bun," Reinhardt muttered softly before rolling over and nuzzling back into his pillow.

Augustine looked towards where Tom sat up in his bed, "do you have your suit yet?" He asked.

Tom nodded but did not speak, he looked rather uncomfortable about the whole situation.

Augustine decided it was best not to pry, well, not to pry with an audience.

....

"EVERYONE! Stand in a line, hurry! Come on, let's move it! Oi Goyle! Stop distracting the girls!" Professor Abernathy's voice boomed down the hall to where the Knights stood. Currently, classes had been cancelled due to practice.

Not quidditch practice, no.

Dance practice.

Everyone was dressed in their usual weekend clothing, which was odd, seeing as it was a Wednesday, and they should be in Potions round about now, but Augustine didn't complain.

He stood besides Tom, who wore trousers that didn't seem to fit him properly and a wool jumper. Tom must've gotten these clothes from the orphanage, he wondered.

As Augustine looked down the hall, he caught sight of Henry Albright; tall and dark haired, the boy was almost the spitting image of Tom. Though, there was something about Henry, the way he held himself, that showed Augustine what Tom could've been if he had been a pureblood like the rest of them.

Maybe that's why Tom had been drawn to him, not because of his Necromancy as Augustine had previously thought, but because Henry was everything Tom was not.

"Now," Abernathy's cut through Augustine's thoughts as he snapped his head back towards the professor. "Who would like to get up here and show everyone how it's done?" It in question was how to dance.

Augustine didn't understand why they had to have dance practice, surely everyone was taught this when they were younger?

Surprisingly, Bunny's hand shot up. Augustine scrunched his nose at the sight as Bunny bounced across the hall to where Abernathy stood.

"And which lucky lady will you be taking to the ball?" He asked Bunny.

"Ladies," Bunny corrected before winking to where Sarah Calloway, another blonde girl and then to where Myrtle stood. Sarah was one of Olive's friends in Hufflepuff, the other, Augustine didn't know, but knew she was a year younger than them. She stood with the Ravenclaw girls, with blonde hair that fell pin straight and a pointed face. Everything about her seemed perfect, as if she didn't have to try to be pretty.

Bunny had a thing for blondes, Augustine realised quite quickly before he looked to where Myrtle stood. She blushed a deep red colour as other girls turned in disbelief that someone like Myrtle could be with Bunny.

Outside of their little club, Augustine had realised what the rest of the school had thought of them. He definitely didn't realise that girls were fawning over Bunny left, right and center.

Abernathy looked uncomfortable with this fact. "Oh, um, right, well which one would you like to demonstrate to the class with?"

Bunny stood there, pretending to think before answering, "how about Cherie? Come here darling,"

Darling? Augustine felt anger rise through him. However, he couldn't do much about it as the pretty girl from Ravenclaw sauntered up with a smile. Even her smile was perfect.

"It would be my pleasure," she spoke. Her French accent poked out from the cracks of the English words and Augustine bit the inside of his cheek to stop himself from hurting her.

And so they danced.

They didn't need much instructions from Abernathy, Bunny seemed to lead well. At times, Bunny would whisper something in the blonde's ear, and she would laugh. Loudly, so that everyone would know how splendid of a time they were having.

Augustine turned away slightly, only to catch a glimpse at Tom, who was surprisingly smiling. A smile that seemed wistful.

He wondered what that meant.
