Later during the day, I was summoned into Lyra's office, as planned. Sure enough, Frejus and Mika were seated next to her, also as expected. I stopped a few paces from them and bobbed a small curtsy.
A moment of silence settled between us, and I felt Lyra's tired lilac eye studying me. "How did it go with the young Eijiro earlier?"
"Eijiro? Are you that close now?" I looked up at her, puzzled.
A smile flicked the corners of the seamed mouth. "He's a good lad. We did share a few riveting conversations."
"Right." I swallowed in a dry throat.
"How are you feeling, Sis?" Mika's voice held a tone of uncertainty.
"Other than the throbbing pain for which I thank Frej, let's say I am good."
"Hey," Frejus snapped, "We trained you well enough to know when the limitation is reached, so don't blame me."
"Yeah, about that," I sucked my lip between my teeth, "I think it's safe to assume that it might be time to lift up a bit of that limitation."
Predictably, all three glared at me with bulging eyes. Frejus was the first to crack, "Are you having a laugh?" a nervous yet bile-tinged chuckle left his throat.
My eyes spun skywards, "Look, as far as I can tell, it's obvi I have gotten the hang of my quirks as they currently stand." I crossed my arm over my chest, thinking back to the ordeal with those 'League of Villains' blokes.
An interesting blend of emotions coursed through their faces. Mika sensed it was a good time to use her balming skills to mitigate the consequence of my reckless words. "Hang on, Sis. You can't just throw this around without giving us context! Just what the effing hell happened back there?"
"Exactly what the school told you!" My palms grew clammy as I had absolutely no desire to plead my case too intensively, knowing that it'd be hard to contain my emotions. But maybe, being honest and vulnerable was the best way to get through to them.
"Listen, if you want my sincere perspective about what really happened yesterday, here it comes," my breath steadied.
"I was at my limit, alright. I couldn't do it. Anything, you understand?" A sob arose in my throat. "My quirks were not strong enough to protect them... If I hadn't endured the drawback of the sigil, then...then... Asui, Mineta, Midoriya and.... Pr.Aizawa would be..."
I could no longer contain the warm tears flooding my eyelids and finally vented all my inner turmoil.
They watched me lose control in silence, profound compassion sweeping through all of them.
"Never have I felt afraid of the enemy, not even during the GEHENA job back then, you know that," I wailed, fingernails digging into my palms. "But for the first time yesterday, terror overcame me as I couldn't match those monsters. Not because of insufficient power, no," I scoffed tearfully.
"But because of a limit imposed due to the lack of mastery of this power within me. Do you have any idea how that feels, huh?" I smashed my fist against the nearby wall, "The fear of not being able to protect the ones you cherish?"
My body was shivering with sorrow and anger. Then, the most unusual gesture came from Frejus. He quietly walked over to me, pulled me against him, patting my hair.
"It's okay, Odin. Fear doesn't shut you down. It wakes you up," his voice carried such an unusual, comforting tone. He closed his eyes, "It takes a great deal of wisdom to become conscious of your fears and weaknesses."
Lyra then, in turn, approached, "You became humble enough to acknowledge your weakness and what actions are required to surmount it. It shows us just how much you've already evolved." She put her hand on my shoulder, "we will review your request and let you know the next steps rapidly."
