Memories ~ Attack on Titan

Chapter nineteen

"Your name is Eren Jaeger. And as a soldier you have promised to give your life if called to, correct?" Zachery asked Eren.
Eren stared up at the man in terror and confusion, "yes" he said plainly.
Zachary continued, "As commander of these armed forces, this matter is left to me. Thus, I will decide wether you live or die. Any objections?"
When Zachery spoke I felt uncomfortable. I had only met the man a few times and every time I had he made me feel a weird sense of unease.
It looked like Armin felt the same.
"No sir," Eren looked at the ground.
Zachary nodded in approval, "let's proceed than. As expected, covering up your existence has proven fruitless. Unless we publicly disclose your existence, we risk the outbreak of wide spread civil unrest. So the choice must be made. The regiment that takes custody of you will decide your fate. The military police. Or the scout regiment. The military police will now present their case."
I looked around and surly enough, I saw the heads of Commander Erwin Miche, Hange and Levi.
If Erwin was here surly Eren would be safe, Erwin isn't the kind to kill on a whim.
A man stood up. "Thank you. My name is Nile Dawk. I am commander of the Military Police,"
I clenched my jaw as Nile presented his case.

Dispose of him? Is this guy crazy?
I think Armin noticed, he grabbed my hand. I felt myself calm slightly as I turned my attention back to Nile.
He continued, "we acknowledge that his ability played a part in turning back the latest Titan incursion, but as has been stated, his existence creates a swell of rebellious sentiment. For the greater good of humanity, after we have gathered all the information we can from him we would see him made a fallen warrior of humanity." I felt my blood boil. Armin and I Jumped as a man yelled,
"No! Unacceptable! This verminous fiend has defiled the mighty wall!" The man continued to yell but I couldn't listen anymore.
This is all crazy talk. These all cultists shouldn't even be here.
"Now i would like to hear the proposal of the scout regiment."
I felt a ray of hope wash over me as I heard Erwin's voice.
"Yes sir. As the commander of the Survey Corp. I, Erwin Smith, propose that we let Eren join our Ranks. Reinstate him as a full member of the scouts, we will utilize his Titan power to retake wall Maria. That is all."
My heart pounded.
Erwin, you're going to have to do better than that. Can't you see, these people aren't on your side here.

"Huh? That's all?"

"Yes. With his help sir, I'm certain we can reclaim wall Maria. I believe our top priority should be perfectly clear."

"Quite bold. Assuming you were given the clearance, where do you plan to launch this operation? Commander Pixis, the hole in Trost has been completely sealed correct?"

Pixis, who was standing not far from Erwin, cleared his throat, "yes. I highly doubt the gate will ever open again."
Erwin continued, "we will depart from Calaneth District, to the east. From there we'll make for Shiganshina. A new route will be established as we proceed."
Erwin was interrupted by a man in casually attire, "but that's ridiculous! Our time and our money would be better spent sealing the gates! That's the only part of the wall that the Colossal and Armored Titan can break right!"
More people started yelling now.
"Shut your mouth you spineless dog! With a titan on our team we can finally take back wall Maria!"

"We can't afford these childish antics!"

I felt my head spin, I looked over at Armin and Mikasa. Mikasa's face was unchanged, if the scouts didn't win I'm afraid of what she may do.
Armin, he looked ready to cry. He still held my hand but I think he was doing it more for his own comfort. Suddenly I heard the familiar deep voice of my father. "Squealing louder won't help your case pig. While we're bolstering our defenses, do you think the Titans are going to just stand by? And when you say we can't afford it are you talking about anyone other than your fat merchant friends? Do you pigs realize most of the people are struggling to just live off the little land we have left?"
I didn't expect my dad to care this much, but I should have known, if Commander Erwin feels so strongly about something my dad will always back him up. But then the arguing started again.
