Who knew that Y/N's first mission back would be an absolute shit show?

The wheezes that escaped Y/N's chest did not compare to the never-ending ache in her ribs. Blood from her bullet wound to the ribs splattered the white snow as she limped away from the compound, praying that Steve and Sam had found their way out and had begun looking for her.

Somewhere among the chaos, her comms had been smashed to pieces, leaving her unable to call for help. The three of them had severely underestimated how many of HYDRA were still here, and it had tremendous consequences.

It took mere minutes to reach the edge of the woods, finding some shelter from the reign of horror that was inside that base. But at the rate she was bleeding into the snow, she did not know how much time she had left to wait.

"Come on, Steve. Where are you?" Y/N gritted her teeth in pain, ripping a strip of her shirt to form a makeshift bandage. A sharp ripple of pain coursed through her body, and she cried out as she clutched onto a nearby tree. Eventually, she slid down the frost-covered bark, sitting against the tree as she awaited her fate.

The shirt strip honestly did nothing, but it felt more reassuring to her that it did. She refused to let despair fall on her, even as she lingered on death's doorstep. Y/N began to search her jacket pockets, hoping to find some other supplies to use to prolong her suffering long enough to be saved by Steve and Sam. But to her surprise, she pulled out a small black flip phone from her pocket. And then she remembered.

Before she had even taken time off from the Avengers, Bucky had forced her to carry a phone with her. While it did seem overly protective and cautious of him to suggest such a thing, Y/N could not be more grateful to see it now.

The phone rang gently, humming next to her ear as she prayed that it would be answered in time. Her heart began to sink with each passing second it wasn't answered, but at the last moment, the line was picked up.

"Hello?"

"Hey, baby. It's me." Y/N smiled sadly, leaning her head back against the tree as she heard her husband's voice.

"Hey, doll! How's the mission going? Is something wrong?"

"It's okay, Bucky." Y/N shushed him gently, wincing as she pressed down on her bandage. "I just needed to hear your voice. I'm missing you."

"I told you that you should've taken another week or two off. You'd miss us too much." Y/N couldn't help but snort at her husband's teasing and rolled my eyes.

"I'm sure I would've. But someone has to be the breadwinner in this family."

"That's enough out of you." Y/N could almost see the grin on his face and it only made her heart ache more, knowing she probably wouldn't see it ever again. "Since I have you on the phone though, I have some pretty big news for you."

"Oh?" Y/N smiled as she gazed up at the sky, watching the sun slowly begin to rise. "And what might that be? "

"Mama!"

Hearing her sweet little girl's voice, let alone her calling out to her, was enough to release the tears that she was desperate to hold back. A small sob racked Y/N's chest, and her fingers began to tremble, both in pain and sadness.

"I can't believe I wasn't there to hear it myself."

"I can't believe her first word wasn't 'Dada', but I'm sure that'll come along soon. Isn't that right Rebecca?" Even from a country away, Y/N could feel Bucky's love and warmth for their daughter. It felt almost comforting to hear this news now, however devastating it was that she would not be here to witness the other milestones in their precious little girls life. Rebecca would have her father, forever and always.

"I'm sure she'll say it soon. She loves you the most, you know." A single tear fell down her cheek, and she sniffled quietly, wiping it away with her free hand.

"Are you sure you're okay, doll?" Bucky's voice was concerned. "Maybe it was too soon for you to go back."

"Perhaps it was." Y/N let out a sad laugh, moving her hand away from her ribs to find it coated in her own blood. Y/N's throat grew thick with tears again. "But you worry about me too much, Bucky Barnes. It's going to be okay."

"I only worry because I love you. Remember when you thought the phone was a stupid idea?"

"Okay, okay. I guess it wasn't that bad of an idea." Y/N smiled at the sound of his laugh through the phone. "Enough worrying about me. Tell me more about home. "

As he continued to speak to me, Y/N felt the remainder of her energy seep from her body. She was too weak to cry, too weak to be afraid, but found comfort in the sound of his voice. Y/N took one final glance at the sky, praying to find hope but settled in enjoying the splash of colors that sunrise brought to appear before her. What a way to die.

"I love you." Her voice cracked with the effort to speak but knew that her words were heard. And with that... Y/N's world went black.
