There was an engagement party going on in the banquet hall of Hotel Sheng Yue, yet it was decorated as if a grand wedding was going on. There were a red carpet and an emcee who had just introduced the future bride and groom. He was singing praises to their love, giving a moving speech that had everyone in tears.
Jennie looked on as the pair walked down the stage. The handsome man and beautiful woman were a fine-looking pair standing together.
"Haha, President Kim, you have such good fortune to have an outstanding son-in-law, he and Krystal are indeed a pair match made in heaven," a guest laughed as he toasted.
Kim Jae wook was happy but tried to sound humble.
Jennie could hardly hear those flattering words, her eyes were watching the groom-to-be, Cha Eunwoo, tauntingly. Standing next to him was Kim Krystal, who was blushing and smiling coquettishly. Cha Eunwoo was gentlemanly and magnanimous, looking down at Krystal with love. His sight swept past Jennie unintentionally and he gave a pause.
After all the guests had finished their toast, Kim Jae wook led Cha Eunwoo and Krystal to each table, toasting their guests in turn. Madam Kim, whose name was Su Changxin, suddenly said coldly, "Jennie, accompany me to the restroom."
Jennie swallowed whatever sarcasm she was prepared to dish out and stood up silently. Su Changxin was already walking in front of her.
With one behind the other, they left the banquet hall. No one had noticed a man in a trim suit behind them. When they walked past him, he paused on the spot. He was a good-looking man who locked his eyes on Jennie.
"Master Manoban? The guests are waiting in the room," Zuo Qiu reminded him uncertainly.
"You can go over first," a pleasant, low rich voice replied casually. It was like a sudden wind that no one could capture in time and before he knew it, the man had walked towards the direction Jennie had headed.
...
Su Changxin had made sure that there was no one in the restroom and locked the door before saying coldly, "This is Krystal's engagement party, why are so obvious with that expression of yours? You can't wait for outsiders to figure out something is wrong?"
Jennie took a deep breath before answering quietly, "I didn't really need to be here today."
What was she doing here? To watch her boyfriend of four years suddenly get engaged to someone who was only her sister in name?
She was totally unaware of the relationship. Cha Eunwoo was still dating her at the time. Even though they were seeing less of each other, she had always thought that he was busy with work. Cha Eunwoo had always let her know how grateful he was that she could understand him.
They were chatting on the phone only one night before when he went to visit the Kim family with Kim Krystal the next day. He had stood in front of her and the entire Kim family to announce their engagement. The Kim family were long aware of Cha Eunwoo's existence and knew that he was dating Kim Krystal. While she was staying in the university's hostel, Cha Eunwoo had already visited the Kim family multiple times as Kim Krystal's boyfriend.
All Cha Eunwoo gave her was this sentence, "Jennie, love is something that is hard to explain. We may not be destined for each other, but we will still be family."
Su Changxin narrowed her eyes and her tone turned ruder than before. "What would people think if you don't attend this party? They would think we are treating the adopted daughter poorly by not allowing you here. Jennie, you should be grateful to our family for bringing you up. I know you like Cha Eunwoo but he is now Krystal's fiancée. You should stop your wishful thinking. It is important to know one's limitations and understand where you stand, don't fight with Krystal for everything."
Su Changxin had never liked Jennie and was never able to treat her as a daughter.
Jennie was adopted to the Kim Family. A long time ago, Kim Jae wook met with an accident at a construction site and was admitted into the hospital in critical condition. He slipped into unconsciousness and the doctor declared that his situation was dire. There was a chance that he might turn into a vegetable. Old Lady Kim and Su Changxin had no idea what to do.
Old Lady Kim was a very superstitious person. She immediately went to her trusted fortune teller and he gave her eight characters. The fortune teller instructed her to find a child born with these eight characters as the child would be able to save Kim Jae wook and bring him prosperity.
According to the eight characters, the child would now be seven years old. None of the Kim family's relatives had a child born according to those characters. Old Lady Kim then went to an orphanage to look through their information and found someone that was a perfect fit, which was Jennie.
The Kim family then adopted Jennie. It could be luck or it could be that the fortune teller was accurate but Kim Jae wook woke up on the fifth day Jennie joined the family. Following that, his condition subsequently improved.
For Su Changxin, however, Jennie was not her real daughter. She was already seven when she came to the Kim family. She was already a grown-up child, which meant that it would be difficult for her to accept a strange family. No matter how good Su Changxin was to her, Jennie will always know that she is not her real mother. Besides, this child's presence meant she would be robbing Kim Krystal of her inheritance. Su Changxin felt that it was unfair to her daughter. What right does a wild child have with the Kim family's wealth?
It was just a coincidence that Kim Jae wook woke up. She had never believed that Jennie could bring any fortune to Kim Jae wook. If a wild child was able to give fortune, won't that mean the real daughter of the Kim family was useless?
That was why Su Changxin had never treated Jennie well. She treated Jennie as a poor child who needed sponsorship and had always given her a hard time. No matter what the situation, no matter what the reason, Jennie was always in the wrong. She was also constantly reminding Kim Krystal to boycott her and not be so nice to her.
As for Kim Jae wook, he naturally does not have a relationship with Jennie. He had never bothered himself with her. Since Jennie was already adopted and the fortune teller's prediction came true, he might as well believed that she brought fortune and treated her like an object placed in the house for a blessing of wealth.
"Aunt Su, don't worry. I won't continue loving a man who is always wavering with his feelings and even betrayed me for money," Jennie said honestly. She did not attempt to hide her sarcasm.
Smack!
Su Changxin slapped Jennie hard on the face. "Jennie, watch your mouth. What do you mean by wavering feelings and betraying you for money? Eunwoo had always been together with Krystal. He has never been with anybody else; you are the one lusting after your brother-in-law."
Su Changxin narrowed her eyes and grimly pointed at her nose with menace. "Remember, this is a one-sided affair for you. Eunwoo has never even looked at you. Don't you let me catch any wild rumors brewing out there."
Su Changxin put her hands down, looked at Jennie's slightly reddened face and said, "You can calm yourself down here for a while. Don't let anyone see you like this."
