Chapter 36

Sam

I had hardly caught my breath from running up the stairs when I saw my brother, sitting in a corner, looking nothing like his usual self.

"Hey." I kept my hands on his shoulder and he looked up.

"Sam." He stands up quickly and hugs me. When we pulled away, I saw that his eyes were red and swollen.

"Hey, Isaac." Natalie smiles at him and he hugs her, sobbing.

"Shhh..."

"What happened?"

"The car lost control and she drove into a ditch trying to avoid a collision with a school bus with kids in it."

"Who got her here?"

"The school bus driver called the ambulance."

"And how long have they---" The rest of the words were long forgotten as I saw the doctor walk out of the room.

We rushed to meet him halfway. "Doctor, how is she?" I question

"Erm.. you are...?" He asks.

"Her sons. We are her sons. " We chorused.

"Oh."

"Yes," Is she going to be alright? "

I'm sorry. " He says, gloomingly patting my back and leaving.

While my little brother hugged me, crying loudly and profusely, I felt my body go stiff and my thoughts suddenly void.

Suddenly, I did not know how or what to feel. Everything just felt cold and it felt like I was floating.

I struggled to stay alert and, slowly, I felt my grip on my brother loosen on its own.

I heard an echo of my name, and I felt myself sinking away. Then, finally, darkness completely enveloped me.

Everything thus becomes dark and still.

"I'm sorry...." Those words uttered by the doctor as he gave me a pitiful sigh, are imprinted in my mind and I could feel that pat on the back ven now.

My mind drifted to yesterday, when I had a final look at her before she was placed six feet below ground.

She was different.

She was nothing like the mom I grew up knowing. Her eyes were shut and had no expression in them. Her hands were placed over her chest and her body looked pale. Too pale. She-

A ring on my doorbell interrupted my thoughts, and lazily, I approached the door and opened it.

To my surprise, it was Natalie.
