41. "Ultimatum"

As I walked to my main door, I smiled as I thought back to my conversation with Natalie and then opened the door.

"What on earth did you do, Samuel Sanderson?" I was taken back by the tone in which Jack addressed me.

He sounded like my father for a second.

"I know I messed up bad." I admitted and walked towards the bar.

" Why would you do that, man? " He walks behind me.

"It was wrong of me." I admitted again.

"It was." He grabs the bottle and poured the wine in our cups.

I sighed and we clicked our glasses together and drank..

"What's going on with you, man?"

I stared at him and he sighed. "Stupid question. I get it. Your mum happened and now Maria is going miles away and so, naturally, it's a lot more than your pretty head can handle." He said and I sigh this time.

"I'm sorry, man. It sucks." He adds.

"Yea. It really does. But I will be fine."

"O..kay? Who are you and what have you done with my best friend?"

I chuckled. "What do you mean?"

"You had a screaming match with Maria, which is understandable because you don't want her to leave, but now, only four hours in, you are sure you will be fine without her."

"I'm not sure. Actually, I think I'm going to fail a lot."

"But you just said..."

"But I will be fine. " I nodded and added. "I got reminded tonight of how much I have been tested by life and by the people in my life and how I have perserved through."

Jack smiled proudly at my response and I asked, "What?"

"I'm just happy to see you act normally. Who helped you think so maturely by the way?"

"Someone you really hate." I smiled, and drank more from my glass.

"Natalie?"

"How did you immediately call out her name?" I shook my head.

"Because I don't hate anyone as much as I hate her.." He replies and I scoff. "Which is why it's pretty messed up that she be the one to tell you that." He adds.

"I don't understand."

"Isn't it rich coming from her considering she left you?"

"You are an asshole."

"I will always speak my truth."

I rolled my eyes. "Did Jane get to her parents' safely?"

"Yea. Dropped her off in the afternoon and dropped by the bar for a couple of drinks afterwards." I laughed and shook my head. He laughs too.

"You are enjoying this, aren't you?"

"Absolutely. When else do I get to live like a freaking bachelor?" He jokes.

I rolled my eyes and said, "Trust me, being a bachelor is not glamorous." I remarked,  stood, and began heading for my room

"What are you going to do about Maria? " He asks after some time.

I heave a long sigh. "For that, I am gonna need your help big time."
