Ok, so maybe Louis is staying a bit longer at work just because, and maybe he just told his mum he doesn't need a ride, and maybe he is now making himself busy by reorganizing everything in his locker because he has absolutely nothing to do right now, but it has nothing to do with Harry. Really it doesn't. Sure, for the past couple of weeks Harry has started to come in his own car and has been offering to take Louis home everytime they get out at the same time but that's completely unrelated to his decisions today. Seriously, nothing to do with it. Point is, Louis is now putting all his stuff back in his locker for the third time when Harry walks in having just finished his shift.
"Hi." Harry says with a hopeful smile plastered on his face. Louis just nods with a shy smile on his face which he tries to hide by shoving his head in the locker, pretending to look for something. "Hey, if you wan..." Harry starts at the same time as Louis says "Listen..."
"You first." Louis says, looking at his bag instead at Harry. Harry just nods his head no, motioning for Louis to continue. "I was just wondering if you could give me a ride? It's just my mum can't pick me up today and I really don't feel like walking right now." He lies, still looking at his bag.
So, maybe it did have to do with Harry but, can you blame him? It was a free ride and even though Louis couldn't just forget what he did to him, Harry was trying hard to be a better person. I mean the kid took a job where he would see his abusive father every day all because he wanted to prove to Louis that he wasn't a monster. Plus, Harry's been really nice in all of their rides and it's nice to end the long shifts on a high note (not that Louis would consider it a high note, because that would mean he likes him again and he doesn't, but it's still nice).
Harry smiles brightly before replying. "Of course, no problem." He picks up his stuff quickly and stuffs it in his bag messily before swinging it on his shoulder and motioning for them to go. "Shall we?"
Once they are in the car, Harry turns the radio on assuming that, as per usual, Louis would be quiet but as soon as it's on Louis turns the volume down so that the music filters through the speakers in a low hum filling the car but still leaving room for conversation if there were to be any. Harry just smiles and nods, accepting it without a question. After a minute or so Harry sighs defeatedly.
"Tough day?" Louis asks conversationally.
"Tough life." He chuckles humorlessly and Louis just looks at him with pitiful eyes so he just continues to try and smooth the tension. "But yeah, today was especially hard. Mrs. Jenkins was just a pain today."
"Who?" Louis asks with furrowed eyebrows.
"Mrs Jenkins, ya' know, the lady with white hair that just sits on the terrace, orders a hundred drinks per minute and just stares at what she calls potential catches?"
"Oh, I call her Mrs Peacock." Louis says, like that is the most normal thing in the world.
"What?" Harry asks in between a chuckle.
"It's true, she acts just like one. She just prances around in her little heals showing of all her jewelry and when she sees someone she likes, which is usually someone really ugly might I add, although really rich so I understand the urge, she just puts on her obnoxious hat, which ironically always has at least one feather on it." Harry just laughs all the way through his speech and Louis definitely doesn't think that's one of his favorite sounds now, that'd be weird so he doesn't think about that. He really doesn't.
"All I'm hearing is that you would date one of those disgusting oldies just for the money."
"How on earth did you get to that conclusion Harold?" Louis really shouldn't be this proud of seeing the way Harry reacts to the nickname but he's only human so give him a break.
"You said you would understand the urge to date one of them." Harry just shrugs with a stupid grin on his face, dimples on display for Louis to revel over.
Louis shakes his head before continuing. "Of everything I just said, that's what you focus on?" Louis says amusedly.
"Well, that's what interested me the most." Harry just focuses on the road as he drives while Louis focuses on how the lights dance on Harry's face as they pass the street lamps before he realizes what he's doing and shakes his head.
"Why would that be the most interesting thing? I just called the woman a peacock, which is a really funny joke if you ask me, and you focus on the fact I understand the woman's urge to go for rich men? Why would you do that?" He asks playfully while he chuckles.
"I don't think you would want to know." Harry starts to blush which only makes Louis' interet peak. For all he knows the boy may have a plan to marry rich or something.
"Well now you have to tell me."
"You really don't want to know, Louis." Harry glances at him briefly with a nervous look and now Louis REALLY has to know.
"I really do though." Louis says with a smirk.
"It's interesting to me because" he pauses looking at Louis one last time to make sure he does want to know and Louis raises a questioning eyebrow at him. "because it's about who you want to date." He swallows as he watches Louis' smile fall from his face.
"Oh." Is all Louis says in reply.
"Yeah. I told you you wouldn't want to hear it."
Almost as if on queue, the car comes to a stop and Louis sees his house through the window. He takes a deep breath in before he gives Harry an awkward smile. "Thanks for the ride." Harry just nods, not looking at him. Louis jumps out of the car and half jogs to his house, opening the door and walking in as quickly as possible. He looks out the window to see Harry's car still parked in front of the house, Harry slouched over the wheel, forehead resting against it. Louis turns around and sighs feeling exactly the same way.
So much for his high note.
Louis just stands there thinking "Why did I have to say anything?", Harry thinking the same thing as he finally drives off.
