Alec stepped into his black car after opening the door on the passenger side for his sister. The two hadn't spoken a word besides the quiet 'thank you' that Veronica had let out after Alec opened her door. It was clear that things were tense at the moment. The tension in the air was practically suffocating. However, they knew things would be okay.
Veronica had gotten inside her head, her thoughts louder than the music that was playing softly over the radio.
"Are you okay?" Alec was the first to speak, breaking the girl from her thoughts.
She hesitated, staying quiet for a moment before nodding slowly, "Yeah.. yeah I think so," She paused, "Are you?""I think so. It.. was so weird to see him again." Alec laughed slightly and his voice cracked a bit, clearly unsettled and lost in a wave of emotions that were threatening to spill out at any moment.
"It's been 3 years, you would think this wouldn't affect us anymore.." Veronica mumbled, leaning her head against the car window as Alec drove to a destination that even he was unsure of.
"Vero, of course it still affects us! After what he did? That isn't going away anytime soon." Alec's voice was frantic, panicked, and unsure.
"I know.. I know.. I just wish it would go away." Veronica sighed.
Silence filled the car once more. Hot tears poured down the female's face while they threatened to spill from the males. Alec parked in an empty parking lot that he had spotted while driving. Once parked, he unbuckled and got out of the car, sitting on the hood. Veronica stayed in the car for a few more minutes before eventually doing the same. They had driven for a long amount of time, a couple hours. They mainly drove in circles around the town of Manburg.
"Did you know he got out?" Veronica asked her brother as she stared into the sky as the sun began to set.
Alec shook his head, following her gaze to the sky that was painted in multicolor. The sun was setting over the horizon causing the normal blue color of the sky to begin fading into a beautiful yellow and orange. Purple and pink highlights lit up parts of the sky near the clouds, vibrant and bright like party streamers, the fading away clouds bringing it all together. It was something similar to a painting Alec might have painted at one point in his life. The boy had a knack for painting sunsets.
"Everytime I look at him.. I just see it all over again." Veronica wanted to cry, hell she wanted to let out the loudest sob she could while yelling and punching the man who had hurt her family so badly. The man who had caused the two Jones siblings so much hurt and trauma. The man who had once been a part of their lives as often as Eret and Fundy, but that was a story for another time.
"What do you think the others will do when we get back?" Alec asked quietly, turning himself to look at his younger sister.
"Probably question the hell out of us." Veronica mumbled, unsure of what they might actually do.
"Honestly, with how we acted. They may just leave it alone." Alec told her, he was being optimistic about it though.
"We are gonna have to tell them eventually." Veronica looked at her older brother.
"Eventually. Not today." Alec nodded, gaining a nod in return.
"I'm tired, Alec. I am so so tired." Veronica mumbled, her voice barely above a whisper as she leaned into her brother's arms.
"Go to sleep, Ronnie. I got you." Alec whispered to her, pressing a gentle kiss on her forehead. His sister was and is the most important person to him and he will do whatever it takes to keep her safe. She knew that. So she let go, allowing herself to fall asleep in the arms of her brother, the man she trusted with her life.
Alec waited for a few minutes after she fell asleep before carefully lifting her up and placing her in the passenger seat of the car. He went back to his side and got in, turning the music up slightly in hopes to drown his thoughts out with some music. Alec soon set off on the road again, this time not driving in circles around the town and instead heading back to the RaceWay where their trailer was.
Luckily for him most everyone had been asleep upon his return. The only one awake was Eret. They had been waiting for the duo's return. Eret had a general idea of what happened to the two, as did Fundy. Seeing as Eret and Fundy were the Jones siblings best friends, it was figured they would know a thing or two about their lives that the others don't know.
Eret stood after hearing the car pull in, immediately opening the door and holding it for Alec. Alec carried Veronica inside and laid her on the bed the Fundy normally slept in. Fundy was in it asleep but Alec figured Veronica would feel better with someone next to her.
Eret took Alec's hand after he shut the door, pulling him outside and sitting on the chairs that were outside. Eret opened her mouth only for Alec to cut them off and speak first.
"If you are going to ask how I am doing, I might punch you." Alec spoke, his voice raspy from crying in the car on the way back.
"I wasn't going to. I swear!" Eret defended, putting his hands up as a sort of mock surrender.
Alec gave them a skeptical look but nodded, sighing quietly.
"Know that I am here for you, okay? You're my best friend and the most important person in my life. You can tell me anything." Eret smiled gently at her best friend, holding his hands in their own.
"I.. I know. Thank you. For everything you do for me." Alec said quietly as he pulled Eret into a hug, one that melted Eret's heart just like Alec always seemed to do.
It was no secret that Eret liked Alec. Well, no secret to everyone but Alec. Alec has always been oblivious though. It was the little things about Alec that Eret liked. How he cared for his sister and friends, how he always checked up on everyone despite the times when his world was falling apart, how his face lights up when he talks about something he was passionate about. Eret had fallen hard for his best friend and was terrified of him not feeling the same way.
"-rt? Eret? You okay man?" Alec's voice had snapped Eret from his trance, causing them to smile at Alec.
"Yeah, yeah. Sorry, I zoned out." Eret chuckled slightly.
"Right, well don't do it again. You worried me man." Alec nudged Eret with a grin whilst Eret's faltered upon being called 'man'. A term that Alec called all his friends. It lessened Eret's hope of something being there between them. Then again, as far as she knew, Alec was straight.
"We should get some sleep. Finals are announced tomorrow." Eret spoke quietly, standing up slowly.
"Yeah, you're right. Good night Eret." Alec stood, hugging his friend once more before heading inside and leaving Eret alone.
Eret stood there for a moment, wiping his face and then heading inside to sleep. Alec was already passed out in his bed when Eret entered.
