In the Hospital, the two boys wait for their parents. Carol has a shift at the very same moment but takes her break to be there for the boys and Burt only arrives a few minutes later. The man walks straight to his son, worry written in his face "Kurt! How are you?". "I'm okay dad" Kurt answers, greeting his father.
Turns out that Kurt has two broken rips but nothing that can't be fixed. Still the doctor wants him to stay over night, just to be sure that everything is okay.
While Burt went home to grab his son some stuff from home, Finn tries to keep his brother company. "I'm fine Finn. You can go and spend some time with Puck or so. I'll just watch some Netflix on my phone until das comes with my laptop" Kurt says, obviously trying to get rid of a very overprotective Finn.
"Fine. But you'll tell me when something is wrong. Also Azemio and Karovski are dead" Finn says but Kurt shakes his head "Finn it's okay. Blaine handled it and when he talked to them they looked freaked out. I don't think they do something again and das will talk to Figgins too.". "Okay but only because you say so" Finn says and fist bumps his brother before leaving the room.
Just as Kurt wants to start Netflix on his phone he gets a notification from Instagram. A message from Blaine Anderson. What does he want? Curiously Kurt opens the message and reads
Blaine Anderson: What did the doctor say?
Even tho Kurt doesn't really know why the bad boy takes so sudden interest in him but he answers.
Kurt Hummel: Two broken rips and I have to stay in hospital over night but else I'm fine
He knows that the other boys won't answer so he starts Netflix on his phone, wanting to chill. Not long and he gets disturbed from Finn and Burt, bringing him everything he needs.
"You can go home. Really. Besides Finn still needs to do some homework over the weekend." Kurt says to his family. He knows that when it comes to school, Burt and Carol will look after it and send Finn home. "Are you sure kiddo? I can stay." Burt asks but his son shakes his head "Dad I'm fine. Besides it's just observation. Nothing I didn't went through yet.". Luckily Burt gives in "Okay. But call me when you need something or something is wrong.". After Kurt agrees he leaves with Finn and Kurt is finally alone. He takes his laptop and makes himself comfortable, wanting to want his Friends, his comfort show.
He couldn't even watch one minute until someone knocks on the door again. "Dad, I said I'm alright!" Kurt says, sounding annoyed. As the door swings open Kurt couldn't believe who walks in.
"Do you always greet your visitors like this Hummel?" the bad boy says, laughing half-hearted. "What are you doing here?" Kurt asks after he just starred a few seconds, trying to believe what's happening. "I wanted to see how you are. You know, to make sure if I have to beat the crap out of Karovski and Azemio." the curly haired boy says, closing the door behind him. The thought that Blaine might actually care about him makes Kurt smile a little. "That's nice but I guess Finn would have that covered. I'm fine." Kurt says thinking that Blaine would leave but instead he sits down next to the bed "Then I'll just keep you company. Better than leaving you alone in this stupid room.".
There is a moment of comfortable silence before Kurt speaks up again in confusion "Hey are you so nice? Here, alone, with me? And why are you so much different in school?". Blaine sighs "I don't want to talk about it.". "Blaine, you know you can talk to me about anything. Just like in old times." Kurt says, reaching for Blaines hand with his own. Blaine on the other hand stands up and says slightly in rage but also in disappointment "It's not like old times Kurt. You disappeared from one day to another and left me alone. I needed you but you weren't there. I changed and maybe you too.". He turns around, walking to the door but Kurt doesn't want to let him go that easily "Blaine wait! I'm sorry and maybe it won't be like in old times ever again but please stay. Keep me company in this stupid room. Talk to me about whatever and maybe one day you want to open up and I'll be there and listen to you.".
Nope, Kurt didn't changers, Blaine thinks. He still this pale boy with and angelic voice, ocean eyes and the most special and caring personality. Blaine listened to the other boy but kept his eyes fixed on the door, thinking about what he just got told. Then he feels a hand on his shoulder and sees Kurt, one hand on his shoulder and the other on his own ribs. "Kurt. Stay in bed." Blaine says protectively and walked the boy to his bed. He sits down and Kurt next to him, asking "So you're staying?". Blaine sighs "If you stay in bed yes.".
The two old friends stayed like this for a while. Kurt sitting on the bed and Blaine on the opposite of him, both crossed legged. They are talking. Just talking. Talking about the most random stuff like the weather, teachers or students at school, movies, the fact that Blaine loves cronuts still as much as Kurt loves cheesecake.
One hour just talking and laughing. Until this very moment Kurt thought that the new Blaine, the bad boy Blaine forgot how to laugh and the sound of his laugh warms Kurts heart. Blaine too enjoys this hour of laughing. He knows that he can show Kurt the real Blaine, the Blaine he normally hides. Even if their friendship isn't back to normal again, they are on a good way because it just feels so good and so right.
After this hour of talking they get interrupted by a knock on the door. "Come in" Kurt says and seconds later a nurse comes in, holding a tray with food. "Dinner time Kurt" she says kindly and puts down the tray on the table next to the bed. "We'll I'm gonna go then" Blaine says casually but before he can stand up, Kurt takes his wrist gently "No. Don't go". He smiles before he adds "Keep me company. I would love to share the food with you".
"Okay" the bad boy answers, not even thinking about it for a second.
"It's good that I got you a second pudding then" The nurse says and winks. "Aww Lisa. You remembered?" Kurt asks in disbelief and Blaine wonders if they know each other and if they do, why? "How could I forget you? The one who always tries to get a second dessert." The nurse, Lisa, answers laughing and leaves.
They have to know each other but why? And could Blaine ask or would it be rude? Before he thinks twice about it he asks the other boy "You know each other?". Kurt nods "I know a lot of the staff members here.". "Why?" the bad boy asks and with his growing curiosity comes concern. The boy hides something. Blaine knows it. He just don't know what.
Kurt takes a moment to think about what he's going to say. He can't tell Blaine the truth. Not yet. Or else maybe he leaves again.
"Finns Mom works here. Usually in a different department but sometimes she switches. Once she did it when I was here. I had a broken... leg. I had a broken leg and she switched departments to look after me during her work times." Kurt tells and the bad boy asks "Broken leg? What happened?". Again Kurt takes a moment to think about his answer before saying "I'm clumsy sometimes. I fell and yeah bad luck. If I remember right it wasn't that long ago. That's why Lisa still knows me and I know her.".
Thinking back to his memories from his time in hospital he smiles sadly. Carol tried to switch departments as often as possible to have an eye on him. Blaine notices the sudden sad expression in Kurts face and takes his hand, saying carefully but worried "You seem sad.". "It's nothing. Just memories and the fact that they still know me" Kurt says and slightly squeezes the other boys hand.
It's good to have him around. He then clears his throat "Let's eat". "Right yeah" Blaine says, he got lost in the touch for a moment, shorter than a second. Next to him Kurt makes some space that Blaine could sit, not caring about the skin to skin contact they're about to have. Blaine don't mind either. On the opposite he could swear there were butterflies in his stomach, even if only for a short moment because Blaine fast pushes them away.
"We could watch some Netflix if you want" Kurt suggests and Blaine agrees. Since Kurt stopped with watching friends, Blaine was completely fine with continue where he stopped. Both boys like the show and decide to keep watching while eating.
"What are we?" Kurt asks, looking at Blaine, after some comfortable silence. "What do you mean?" Blaine asks back, his eyes still fixed on the screen.
"Are we strangers who doesn't know each other, do you still hate me or can I canon you a friend again?" Kurt explains his question. "Well, for strangers we are to close don't you think?" Blaine says and Kurt nods. "Even if I didn't forgave you yet, do you think I would've stayed the whole time if I still hate you or would've come here in first place?" The bad boy continues and this time Kurt shakes his head. There is his answer. Friends. "And at school? Are we friends there?" Kurt asks further and finally Blaine turns his head to look at Kurt. "Look Kurt-" he starts but the other boy interrupts him "I should've known...". "I have a reputation Kurt. For a reason. I'm not ready to risk it. But we still can be friends outside of school." Blaine explains, hoping that Kurt will agree to that. "I mean we can try but it's not what I hoped for. I missed you." Kurt says to Blaines fortune.
"I missed you too but you're the one who practically vanished." Blaine snapped, instantly regretting it. "I'm sorry. It's just... You said you need time and so do I okay. Maybe one day I'm ready to tell you." Kurt says and thankfully Blaine nods understandingly.
That just go back to watching friends until Kurt looks at the time. 10pm. "Blaine it's late. I think you should go home" Kurt says and the bad boy frowns "Are you trying to get rid of me Hummel?". Kurt laughs "No. But aren't your parents get worried?". By the mention of his parents a cold shiver runs through Blaines body but he plays it cool, like always, "Oh they won't mind". "If you say so" Kurt says and shrugs. "Why didn't one of the staff send me away some time ago anyways?" Blaine asks back and now Kurt is the one who plays it cool "Maybe it was Carols work.". He shrugs but smiles a little.
It's not Carols work. The staff just remembered how much better Kurt feels with good company around him. "So how long will you stay? I don't want you to drive home alone in the middle of the night." Kurt says, slightly concerned but Blaine shakes his head "At least until you fall asleep and if I have to sleep here. It's not a problem and not the first time we share a bed.".
True. Blaine and Kurt had sleepovers before. Mostly at Kurts place because Blaines parents often had to work late or go to congresses so Blaine stayed with the Hummels.
Secretly Blaine really wants to sleep here with Kurt close to him. This way he won't feel lonely and he can make sure that Kurt is okay. It's a win win situation for him. Maybe the butterflies come back and this time he won't push them away. He likes the way he feels around Kurt, where he can be truly himself.
Little did he know that he isn't the only one feeling butterflies in the presence of the other.
It don't take long for Kurt to fall asleep with his head resting on Blaines shoulder. Blaine smiles, adoring the sleeping boy next to him. There they are, the butterflies. Feeling like that it don't take long for Blaine either until sleep takes over and he closes his eyes.
