"There's gotta be somebody here who needs help!" The duo were standing at the edge of the designated festival site, watching people help with the set up everything. The festival was going to start in less than a week, and the organizers were extremely busy. After hearing Freddy's suggestion about finding a way to earn some money, Gregory insisted they find someone to help with the festival prep. Hence their presence at the site now. "Why don't you go ask around?"
"I wonder who the organizers are? I should probably ask them." Freddy glanced to the boy, a little nervous at walking up to one of the organizers directly. What with who one of the big sponsors were, and that meant they would probably recognize him. He can't be sent back to the Pizzaplex now, he has a responsibility. A responsibility to watch over Gregory, to protect him. But, seeing as Gregory asked, Freddy proceeded to scan the area for who looks most like they could be an organizer. "Let me see..."
A couple stood at the opposite end of the street. They wore colorful lanyards with name tags attached to them, and they both had clipboards. They looked to be in charge of something at least. "There, Gregory! Do you see that couple way over there?" The bear knelt down to Gregory's height, before pointing to the two people in question. Gregory squinted his chocolate brown eyes a bit as he tried to spot them. "Oh, I see! Yeah, they look important!"
"Why don't you go speak with them?" Freddy suggested, giving Gregory a small pad on his shoulder. "Okay, let's go!" The boy began walking in the direction, before noticing that the bear wasn't following. "Aren't you coming?" Standing up straight again, Freddy gave a small apologetic look. "I am sorry, superstar, but I think it would be best if I waited for you here." Gregory gave his friend a small, puzzled look, but shrugged. "Oh... okay." Freddy watched as the boy walked off to speak with the couple. They seemed friendly enough, so he shouldn't be worried. The animatronic should, however, should be paying attention to the small alert that popped up in his HUD.
"Excuse me?" Gregory called, approaching the two. "Oh, hello there!" The lady greeted with a smile, putting her clipboard under her arm. "Can we help you?" She asked. "Yeah. I was wondering, are you guys hiring festival workers?" The two blinked, not expecting tp be approached by a kid asking such a question. "I'm sorry?"
"I want to earn some extra cash, and well, it looks like a lot of work needs to be done here. I can help!" Gregory explained, giving the two a polite smile. The couple exchanged glances for a moment, as the boy stood there waiting for an answer. "... There is a lot of work."
"Renee!" The man quietly exclaimed, almost as he if wanted her to not humor Gregory's request. Renee smirked, and patted her husband's shoulder reassuringly. Turning to Gregory, she asked, "Do your parents know your here?" The boy quietly gulped, thinking of a response. "Y-Yep! I walked here from my house, actually. They said it was alright for me to help out here." He lied, hoping they'd be convinced. "They must know somebody who works here, I'm guessing?"
"Yeah... I, um, have an older cousin who works here. She's going to be selling.... soaps!" Renee nodded a little. "'Soaps'? I see!" The man shook his head a little. He already knew where this was going, as his wife had a soft spot for kids. "I think we can find you something to do, and then once you've finished your work, we'll see about paying you. How does that sound, hun?"
"Yes, ma'am!" Renee laughed a little. "Great! Well, I guess introductions are in order. I'm Renee Jones, and this is my husband, Felix Jones. What's your name?" Renee asked him. "Gregory." The boy answered, hoping they wouldn't ask for a last name. "It's a pleasure to meet you, Gregory. How about I show you around?"
"Okay!" Gregory exclaimed, as Renee gestured for the boy to follow her.
As they walked along the street, looking for a small job Gregory could do, the two heard a loud crash, followed by Freddy profusely apologizing. Looking over, the boy saw that a vendor's stand display of jams had been knocked over, some of the jars shattering. The vendor was berating the animatronic, while the bear shrunk a little thanks to the man's shouting. "I-I am sorry...!"
"Can't you watch what you're doing?!" Renee looked over, and noticed the whole commotion. "Oh dear, um, hold on a minute, Gregory." With that, she crossed the street to go see what was doing, unaware of Gregory following. "What happened?" The man looked to Renee, his face red in frustration. "Well, this brute here, came over and knocked over my jam display!"
"I-It was a mistake... I did not mean to!" Renee gave the bear a puzzled look, as she was certain he wasn't with any of the other vendors. "Where did-?" Gregory cut her off, rushing in front of Freddy. "Hey, sorry about your jams, my friend didn't mean it!" The bear looked down to Gregory, who gave him a small nod. "... You know this- this robot?"
"Uh... yes." Gregory responded, not really sure how to explain his situation. "I-I see..." Renee slowly said, before turning to the jam vendor. "Look, Mr. Collins, I'm sorry about the jam. It was a mistake, things happen. I'll see to it that you get help cleaning up this mess, and that you get a better stand for you glass jars." Mr. Collins grumbled a little, but concurred all the same.Looking back to Gregory, Renee paused a moment as she thought. She glanced to Freddy, before looking back to the boy. "Well, then, I guess I've shown you all for now. You think you can come here after school to help out, Gregory?" He nodded, before adding, "I can even come earlier too, if you need!"
"... Really?" Freddy glanced to the boy nervously, as Gregory seemed to realize what he'd just said. "Um, yeah, 'cause I'm... homeschooled." Renee hummed. "Oh, well then, if it's alright. I guess that way you wouldn't have to stay so late, no would you?" Gregory laughed, a little bit nervously. "Okay, well I guess I'll see you tomorrow afternoon, Gregory."
"Oh, thanks Mrs. Jones!" The boy thanked, holding a hand out for her to shake. The woman chuckled a little, but gladly shook it. "See you tomorrow!" Gregory said, before grabbing Freddy by the hand and walking off with him.
"So, she has given you a job?" Freddy asked as they walked back to the van. Gregory nodded excitedly. "Yup!" The bear smiled. "That is great, superstar!" He exclaimed. While they continued to walk, Freddy seemed to notice Gregory's excitement had died down a little. "Hey, Freddy?"
"Yes?" The boy continued. "What happened at the jam stand?" He wondered curiously. "O-Oh, well, I was being clumsy, is all. It was just an accident." Gregory arched a brow at the animatronic. "Oh, yeah? You're not really clumsy." He commented. "Well, there is a first time for everything, as they say."
"Yeah, I guess that's true." Trying to sway the topic of conversation away from the jam incident, Freddy suggested, "I have an idea. Why don't we get you a celebratory ice cream cone?" Gregory's face lit up again. "Yes!" Freddy chuckled, as the two then began walking to the nearest ice cream vendor, or truck—whichever they found first.
