Just Missed 'Em

The sound of Vanessa's key ring jingling with each step she took resonated as she made her way down to the loading docks. "Don't worry, you'll be compensated for having your vacation time cut early." She assured the person on the other end of the line. "I better be." The man replied, a bit of a bite in his tone. Ignoring it, Vanessa continued. "Look, just don't let the robot go anywhere, Drew and I are on our way out now."

"Yeah, I'll do my best." There was something distracted in the way he answered. Climbing into the passenger seat of the company van—Drew getting into the driver's—Vanessa asked, "What's up?" The van's engine was started. "The gas station employee is already meddling." The woman blinked, brow furrowing in confusion. "Why?" Her green eyes widened. "Don't tell me he's gonna piece him apart like a computer project!"

"No, nothing like that," The man assured her. "Then, what?" Vanessa questioned. "There's a kid with the robot, and the employee is helpin' him out. He's tryna fix it." An audible groan could be heard from her. "Is it a nine-year-old boy with brown hair and eyes, shorts and a jacket?" There was a second's pause. "Uh, yeah. Why?" The man wondered. Lowering her phone a little, Vanessa looked over to Drew. "It's the same kid from the festival, and who was wandering the Pizzaplex."

"That's just great." Drew commented, sarcastically. Vanessa brough her phone back up to her ear. "Keep them at the gas station as long as you can, Roberts!" She told him. "I'm getting sick of all this running around." At that, Roberts asked, "Why all the bother? We can easily slap a new Freddy shell on an endoskeleton—the customers won't care!"

"... Just keep me posted about them, okay?" Vanessa asked, evading the question. "Right..."

"Can't we just shock his battery again?" Gregory asked, wringing his hands together in a worried way. Kurtis shook his head 'no'. "I don't want to risk frying any important wires if we tried that again." He explained, closing up Freddy's battery compartment. The man then looked over to Gregory, noticing the sad pout on the boy's face. "Hey kid, look," He began. "My shift'll be over soon. If you stick around, I'll bring you and your friend back to my place. I'll be able to fix him up with a new battery no problem."

"Really?" Kurtis nodded, giving the boy a smirk. "Sure, thing. Let's get your pal tucked away in the van and I'll drive you both to my place later." Standing up to open the passenger door to the van, Gregory then asked, "But, don't you have to drive your own car?" Hefting a powered-down-Freddy, Kurtis answered, "I had problems with the engine this morning, so I took a taxi."

"Oh." Gregory hummed, as Freddy was seated. Kurtis did the seatbelt, even going as far as locking it so the animatronic wouldn't fall over. "There." With that, the door was closed. "You wanna hang with me while I work, kid?" Kurtis asked, leaning against the van. Gregory thought for a moment, glancing back to Freddy through the passenger window. "Shouldn't I stay with Freddy, though?"

"We have a perfect view of the van from inside. You don't have to worry about that." Kurtis said, gesturing to the window. As he did, he noticed the customer he'd all-but-abandoned inside. "Look, you're welcome to if you want. I have to go help that guy, now." Gregory watched as Kurtis hurriedly made his way back inside. He hummed to himself. Taking one more look at Freddy, the boy shrugged. "Okay, then..."

During the rest of Kurtis' shift, Gregory stayed at the front counter. He was given a chair, seeing as he could barely look over the surface. From where he sat, he had a perfect view of the van just like Kurtis told him. That gave the boy some peace of mind whenever he looked out to see that Freddy was still where he'd been left. He still found it weird how the animatronic had just dropped like he did. Though, Kurtis assured him it was just that his battery had died, and was now kaput.

There was something odd about the rest of Kurtis' shift. The customer he'd come by to help. The guy kept hanging around. He claimed he was "waiting on someone", but Gregory didn't quite believe him. The boy guessed he was waiting for a moment when both he and Kurtis had their backs turned, so he could go snag Freddy or something. After all, the guy kept looking out the window to the van, too. The guy seemed like no good.

"Hey, kid," Gregory was suddenly broken from his thoughts. Kurtis pat him on the shoulder. "Lindy, my co-worker, just pulled up. My shift's done." He told, slipping on his jacket. "Oh! Great!" The boy exclaimed, sliding off his chair. "Let's go, then!" Kurtis chuckled, following after the boy just as Lindy came through the back entrance of the gas station. The customer watched them leave, a small frustrated look on his face. He furiously dialed up his 'friend' again, letting her know they were about to miss the two.

"We're almost there, what's up?"

"They're leaving!"

"What?! Which way are they going?" The man looked out the window, watching as the van pulled out of the gravel parking lot. "They're headed North, away from the city still." He told her. The man then heard his 'friend' tell her driver to keep going past the gas station.
