Some Fun & Sleuthing

It was another pleasant, fall day. In trying to find something to pass the time, Freddy had suggested that they go out and fly Gregory's kite. Kurtis had arrived by then, deciding that since he had the day off, he'd spend it getting to know the duo. Considering that there were many trees in the neighborhood Bill's house was located in, trying to fly a kite would be challenging. Kurtis told the two that he knew of a park elsewhere in town, just a walking distance's away. It'd be the perfect spot to fly a kite.

And so, Freddy and Gregory could now be found running about the park—kite high in the sky. Thankfully for them, the park barely had any other people in it considering most people were either at their jobs, or the children were in still in school. Laughing a bit, Freddy watched Gregory run past him, holding onto the kite string. The wind was favorable that day. "Look how high it is, Freddy!"

"It see! You're doing great, superstar!" Freddy called back. As Gregory continued to run circles around the park, Freddy glanced over to Kurtis. He'd been sitting on the park bench since they'd arrived, gaze stuck to his phone. Almost as though he were doing something. Curiously, the bear approached the man. Noticing the tall animatronic from his peripheral vision, Kurtis looked up. "Oh- Hey." He briefly glanced over to Gregory. "Looks like Gregory's having fun."

"He is." Freddy agreed, before then asking, "May I ask what you are doing?" Kurtis gave a small nod, before tapping something else on his phone. "I'm putting in an order." The bear tilted his head a little. "An order? For what?" Turning his phone off and pocketing it, Kurtis looked back up to the bear. "I've ordered you a brand new battery. I don't know how much longer that car battery is going to hold out, afterall."

"Oh! Thank you!" Freddy thanked, smiling. Kurtis waved him off humbly. "Don't mention it." He answered, smirking. "Hopefully with this new battery, you should be able to go quite a while without needed to be charged." He explained. "That will be wonderful." Freddy commented. Kurtis nodded, before getting up from the bench. "Hey, there's a small shop not far from here that's still selling ice cream. You think Gregory would be down?"

"I'll ask him, but I'm sure I know what the answer will be." Freddy told, before returning to Gregory. Kurtis watched as the bear asked the boy the question he had asked—all while the kite slowly floated to the ground. Catching the kite, Freddy was then met by an excited reaction from Gregory. Kurtis laughed and shook his head a little, while the two made their way back over to him. "Come on, let's go then!"

"Uno!" Gregory called, a mischievous look on his face as he placed down his second-to-last Uno card. The card just so happened to have a "+4" on it, causing Kurtis to grumble as he did as the card instructed—now having four more cards added to his own hand of three. Freddy couldn't help the small snicker at the sight, as Kurtis' turn came to an end. "Well, I've lost."

"There may still be hope for you, Kurtis." Freddy assured him, before setting down his color-changing card. Gregory eyed the bear suspiciously, crossing his fingers that his friend's next move would be unknowingly in his favor. "I am changing the color to yellow." At that, the boy threw his head back. "Ugh! Freddy, how could you?!" Kurtis laughed. "That's what you get, kid!" With an audible "hmph", Gregory picked up a card from the deck, finishing his turn. Just as he did, the front door to the house opened. "I'm back!"

"Hey, Uncle!" Kurtis called out, setting a card down. After hanging up his coat and taking off his boots, Bill made his way into the living room to find his three guests engaged in a game of Uno. "Looks like you guys are keepin' busy." He commented, sitting down nearby and putting the file in his hand onto his lap. Noticing it, Kurtis asked, "What, did you bring work home with you?"

"Not necessarily." Bill answered, crossing his arms and looking down to the file. "I hate to interrupt your game, but I wanna tell you all about what I've got here." He told them, adding with, "It involves Gregory." Both Gregory and Freddy briefly exchanged looks, before giving their attention to Bill. Uncrossing his arms, Bill opened the folder. "I did some looking around in our databases to find anything about a call to the police in the other city the night you, Gregory, were in the Pizzaplex."

"Wait, you did?" Noticing the confusion in the boy's tone, Freddy weighed in to enlighten him. "Oh, this morning while you were still asleep, Bill and I talked before he left for his shift." The bear explained, earning a quiet "oh" from the boy. "Anyways, what I found was pretty puzzling." Bill continued. "Nobody called the police station that night." It was now Freddy's turn to look confused. "Are you certain? Maybe it is just that you weren't able to access the right information?"

"With my rank, and our station's database, accessing stuff as small as a phone call is pretty easy. We do it all the time with investigations." Bill replied. He continued. "Anyways, so then after that gave me nothing, I though 'well maybe they called child services'." Gregory glanced away at the mention. Bill noticed, but said nothing. "No calls were made to them either." He explained. "In the end I gave up searching the phone records for the time being."

"Then, what's the file for?" Kurtis wondered with an intrigued look. "I called social services, and asked them about Gregory. They faxed me what information they have on him." Gregory's gaze had fallen to his lap, as he fiddled with his pant leg. Bill opened the file to reveal one single piece of printer paper, the info on it looking to barely reach the bottom of the page. "Says here Gregory spent a short time in foster care when he was a toddler, but was adopted soon after being put in the system."
