It happened to me

Kyo had managed to form some normality in her life again. But everything was still screwing with her head.

Shinto remained by her best friend's side as much as she could, but no amount of "it'll be ok" or "soon you'll feel better." Made the pain lessen.

It hurt the angel to see Kyo in such a state. No swagger in her step, the bright and sassy expressions. Her smile wasn't genuine either; her fang didn't catch her bottom lip.

The wolf's personality was a dulled-down version of who she used to be. But with time, the wound would heal. It had to.

Shinto had made no more attempts to talk to Koga. For it got her nowhere, all he did was flirt with the school girl, Inuyasha, always ungluing the two.

Her issues had been pushed aside since Inuyasha asked if she was the forgiving type.

Soon though, she too would face what she'd been trying to avoid for so long, and there was no time like the present.

Once Koga had left and Kagome did her routine check on Kyo, asking if she felt any better. Inuyasha took the chance to be alone with Shinto.

"Can we talk?"

Shinto nodded softly, letting Inuyasha lead her to where they had spent most of their time with one another 50 years ago in the field of buttercups.

"What's the occasion for bringing me here?" Her heart thumped at the beautiful memories made here.

But when Inuyasha turned, his features appeared...sorry? Hurt maybe?

"I asked if you were the forgiving type, and you answered differently. You said you were and walked off."

Shinto averted her eyes and fiddled with her sleeve. "Yeah, I did." Her heart beat in her ears, anxiety like a tsunami in her stomach.

But she mustered up the courage to say what he wanted to hear, what she should've announced much earlier on possibly.

She sucked in a big breath, "Inu-"

"I give up."

Her eyes widened, and the words died on her tongue, "what?"

Inuyasha sighed, "I know you can't forgive me; you won't. I don't expect you to anymore; the devil part of you usually comes out when I'm around. I've ended up causing you nothing but pain."

He placed his hand on his sheath. "And you're right...all we do is fight; we can't hold a normal conversation without arguing. We've become two different people from the last time we saw each other. I'm glad I was able to save you from Balor, but...you still hate me."

Shinto's belly dropped; it felt like a heavy stone had been lodged in her gut, and swallowing became hard too. Now the feeling of a lump resided in her throat.

"You'll never be able to accept me as...anything. We are on different paths, and I think maybe they should be separate paths. I can't wait for something I know you'll never give me. You can hang around if you want but for me..."

No. Don't. Please don't say it.

His amber eyes met her shining yellow ones and in the most serious tone, she had ever heard him speak.

That sentence rang loud and clear, "It's goodbye, Shinto."

He lowered his head as he walked past her and said nothing else.

No noise penetrated her ears, just the deafening silence. All the angel could do was stand there in shock, for she was frozen, unmovable.

Breath caught in her lungs, retinas burning as the once roaring, red organ of hers.

Shattered.
