Secure and Awake

The three police officers sat in the living room of Lan XiChen. They knew they should sleep but it wasn't going to happen. Before they could sleep, they had to make the security arrangements.

All three were on their phones.

Lan Wangji was talking to his brother. Lan Xichen was arranging a VIP room that would be shared by Wei Ying and Yu Bin. The room would be registered under other names. Only Lan Xichen and Yu Qing would be allowed in as doctors. There would be six nurses. One for each patient for each eight hour shift. Lan Xichen and Yu Qing were choosing the nurses so they could have a security check run on them.

Jiang Cheng was arranging for twelve policemen. Teams of two in four hour overlapping shifts. Two would stand the door while two would patrol. They were to dress casually but carry their badges and have their weapons under their jackets. All were personally chosen by Jiang Cheng. He had developed a schedule and told his officers via tele-meeting if he heard one whisper of this assignment, there would be consequences. He didn't raise his voice when he said it either. They would have preferred his yelling.

Their names were already given to The Spider's team for a full investigation. Nie Huaisang had done the unthinkable. He was allowing his secretary, Ouyang Zizhen, to have access to his 'collection' under the supervision of his brother Nie Mingjue. Anything he had on the police officers or nurses would be available to them. Added to what was available from more traditional sources, they would have a relatively complete picture of each individual.

Nie Huaisang was using his phone to dig through his database. He was sending pictures of known associates of Wen Chao to be printed into books for the police officers. There would also be a book with pictures of those allowed to pass. Not in the Pass Book, they weren't getting in.  Charlie and Xin Di weren't sure what was going on and they knew better than to ask. They were told it was confidential and it was vital to have the pictures ready by dawn. They dug in, drank enough coffee and ate enough chocolate to be wired for a week but everything would be completed.

Two undercover officers had already been inserted in the recovery room to guard Wei Ying and Yu Bin.

There was also concern about Wei Yuan's safety. Lan Wangji had filled in Nie Huaisang concerning what the child had said. He had been loud when he made the statement about Wen Chao killing his mother. There was always the possibility it had been passed to the wrong people.

"He will stay with me or one of you. If - " he paused, "If he will go with you. He needs time before we question him and we need the help of someone who specializes in working with traumatized children. Otherwise, he could withdraw so far that he'll refuse to share anything with us." Lan Wangji said. The other two men agreed.

They had watched Lan Wangji hold A'Yuan all night. When they suggested he lay the child down next to him on the sofa, Lan Wangji had just replied, "I don't want him to wake and be frightened."

As for Wen Chao, his security detail was simple. He was hand cuffed to the bed with four police officers staring at him. Guards outside the door in riot gear. Jiang Cheng had even made two of his men scrub up and stand guard during emergency surgery on Wen Chao's arm. Lan Wangji had broken his arm in two different places requiring surgery to set it and remove the bone fragments.

Nie Huaisang had made a mental note to send a Thank You card.

Jiang Cheng was disappointed the fractured orbital socket he had given Wen Chao didn't require surgery. He made a mental note to spend more time boxing at the gym.

Jiang Yanli was in the spare bedroom talking to her husband, Jin Zixuan. They had texted during the day but she wanted to hear his voice.
