Jiang Yanli sat on her husband's lap and cried into his shoulder. He held her close making small soothing sounds. The story had been ripped out of her in fragmented sections as she told Jin Zixuan what little she knew.
He couldn't hide his shock. He had never cared for Madame Yu. There was something about her that reminded him too much of his father. He had always been polite when allowed to be so, just as A'Yanli was with his father. But who could possibly expect information like this?
Right now, he needed to focus on the immediate needs. Wei Ying was safe and his job was to help his distraught wife. A soft kiss on her forehead.
"We'll deal with this together, my heart." he whispered and she tightened her grip on his neck.
"I'm so sorry. I sh-should have known. Mo - Madame Yu has never liked Wei Ying but I never thought..." she sniffed and looked up at her husband. Red, swollen eyes. Tears on her cheeks. Trembling lips. A wobbly chin.
A thumb kindly wiped the tears as he cupped her face.
"You have nothing to be sorry for, A'Yanli. You did not do this. Madame Yu did. Now, we will stand strong together and take care of Wei Ying and his son. That is all we can do."
"I will contact my security people and have things set up in case you need additional security for yourself or Wei Ying. There will be a storm when this hits the news but we can do anything together, my heart. We can." his words were warm, assured, steadfast. She could lean on him and he would stand firm for her.
"I love you so much." her words were choked and there was another sniff in the middle.
He gave her a small smile. "I love you too."

It had apparently taken the nurses a bit to gather their courage to brave the VIP room and its occupants. When they entered, the three men went silent and looked at them. Without the security checks complete, they eyed everyone as potential enemies.
Jiang Cheng looked at them sternly. "Stand there." he pointed at the spot he wanted them. The nurses shuffled into position.
"Stay put." He gave them a glare that would have had veteran beat cops trembling in their boots before he turned to Yu Qing. He gently shook her shoulder. She drowsily glanced up at him.
"I am sorry to disturb you but are these the nurses you are expecting?" Jiang Cheng asked quietly. She sat up a little further and looked over the nurses.
"Yes. They are the ones. Is everything okay?" She couldn't help but flash a look at Yu Bin before returning her gaze to the man leaning over her.
"It's fine. Go back to sleep." his voice was soothing so she listened to him and laid back down. He pulled the blanket up a little bit further on her shoulder and then she was asleep.
He stood and looked down at her. With his back to Lan Wangji and Nie Huaisang, he didn't bother to hide his smile. He liked this one indeed.
By the time he turned around, the smile was gone. "You may continue. Be as quiet as possible and do not touch them more than is necessary. Do you understand?" Jiang Cheng was back in full inspector-mode.
They nodded and quietly took vitals, checked IVs and replaced them. A careful look at the surgery sites, quick check on the warmth of extremities and the nurses left in a huddle like ducks running from an impending storm.
While the nurses were checking the patients, Lan Wangji and Nie Huaisang had scrutinized every move they made. If anything had seemed even slightly off, they had every intention of stopping it. They would take no chances.
