Elena's POV:
My soul somersaulted against my body when I saw Alex mount inside the chopper and leave without a second glance. Why? Why for me?
I tug the door handle, hoping for the door to open to let me through. It didn't. I watch the chopper take off, the blades cutting the thin air and slashing my charred heart open.
I look down, bringing my trembling fisted hand up. While we ran to the stairs, I felt Alex pass me something in my hand. I open my fist and see a part of Alex's words and unfulfilled wishes lay on my hand.
A ring.
I swallow the lump that had been lodged in my throat. I have to fix this. Alex left with Meghan and Meghan, she would use every technique at her disposal to inflict an irremediable scar on him. And there's only one person I can seek help from and I hope he better has something planned out.
I turn and run down the stairs, a hope raising within my chest as I rush towards the office of his. Without knocking, I slam the door open. I pause when I see the chair empty. Where is he?
I grab my phone hastily and check his location. It shows within the building but on the other block of the agency where the weapons room and security room are situated.
I sprint down the corridor and come to a sliding stop in front of the security room when I see most of the members of my team gathered there.
"Dad?" I call him, my voice for the first time held desperation, a need for support. My father went stiff for a second before he turned to meet my tired eyes.
"Elena."
When I look behind him, I see the camera footage of the roof. When realization slammed into my skull, I felt rage boil up. He was watching us. He knew about Meghan's arrival. He knew about Alex's departure.
He knew I was dying.
And instead of being a righteous chief, he chose to be a righteous father at the expense of Alex's life. Did he really not consider the well-being of his agents? Are they so insignificant when it came to his family? Is he so selfish that he saves my life by risking Alex's?
"How could you?"
"I can't let you die."
"What about Alex?"
"Elena, you didn't listen to our plan. He had to get caught so we could end this. All of this. I had no other choice."
I stepped forward, my eyes squinted in thin lines as I clench my fist so I don't react rashly. "How dare... It wasn't your choice to make!"
"Elena, listen for once-"
"I am getting him back. You can't-"
"Chief," Jayden ran in, a petrified look on his face. He heaved heavily, his eyes distorted with fear. Chief walked towards him, asking him what happened. I was about to snap in anger at how we are diverting from a serious matter but stop when I see Jessica and Gwen enter. My eyebrows raise in concern when Gwen was bleeding heavily despite her arm being wrapped up. What happened to her?
"Meghan," A pause. "She got Ben. I couldn't stop her," Gwen whispered as she hangs her head down, shame colouring her face. "I am sorry, chief."
My dad stood still as I feel my head pound badly. How has this day ended so badly? She got Ben and Alex. Both of my teammates are under her control. What am I going to do now?
"I got the connection!" Jennifer screamed. All of our eyes found the huge monitor which shows a dark incomprehensible dungeon with few lights in and around. Ben was there, sitting on a chair, talking something to the king. I could see clearly how the king is red in anger as Ben fuels him more.
