"Can you feel it coming in the air tonight?"
---

"The Beacon County Sheriff's Station responded to a call late last night regarding a body found by two joggers in the Beacon Hills Preserve. Sheriff Stilinski of the Beacon County Sheriff's Station has said that despite there being a suspect in custody, citizens of the town should take caution when walking through the Preserve. Hunters have been seeing a steady incline of odd animal activity the last few –"

Mom immediately turns the volume of the radio down as we pull up alongside the curb of Beacon Hills High School. She eases onto the brake and switches the gearshift into park, and out of the corner of my eye, I see her rest both of her hands on the steering wheel again once the car stops moving. I keep my gaze forward, and then shift it to the right, staring out at the school.

It seems like a normal high school, with red brick and concrete, large windows and a few metal doors providing different entrances. The parking lot just ahead is quiet and empty, which makes sense considering it's 8:09 A.M., which is just a few minutes past when first period begins according to the schedule the administration office gave me a few days ago when I came to pick up a few forms that needed to be filled out to complete my transfer to the school.

"Do you have everything you need?" Mom asks softly, cutting through the silence in the car like a freshly sharpened kitchen knife.

I release a small sigh, nodding wordlessly. My tense shoulders fall slightly as my forefinger and thumb raise to my lips, picking at the already torn skin there. This isn't what I wanted, but I know it needed to happen. I can't go back there, not after everything, not after what I did. Transferring seemed to be the only option.

"Are you supposed to go into the main office?" Mom inquires as I turn my gaze back to the windshield, setting my arm down once more. In my periphery, I can see her looking through the passenger side window as if she could possibly see far enough to peer through the school windows facing us.

"No, the vice principal is supposed to meet me outside and bring me into my first class," I inform her. Then, lowering my voice to a mutter, I add, "Which isn't embarrassing at all."

"Honey, look at me," Mom pleads gently and softness encases my hands which are now clasped together on my lap. I look down, finding her hand to be holding my own. I keep my gaze down, not wanting to meet her eyes. "I know this isn't what you wanted, but that doesn't mean it has to be something bad."

"This," I say, removing a hand from my lap and gesturing to the school as I chance a quick glance at her, "isn't something bad." I shake my head, returning my gaze forward. "What I did was something bad."

Mom takes her hand back and raises it to my head, beginning to brush pieces of blonde hair behind my ear. "Ainsley Jade, even people that have made mistakes deserve happiness," she tells me and I scoff. "You know what I always say; all things work together for good."
