"Who are you really?"
---

The following Monday after Lydia's party, I'm making my way down the hallway after school, unrolling my earbuds from my bag to plug into my iPod as I head toward the locker room to change for kick line. I'd gotten Allison's text that she was home shortly after Stiles made his bizarre visit to my house just to make sure I got home okay, but other than a few other texts between us, I hadn't heard anything from her until this morning in English class, but the topic of Scott seemed to be completely off limits, so I didn't push it.

As I walk toward the school doors, wrestling with the earbud wire as I do, I find that I'm coming up to the boys' locker room. The door is pushed open slightly, likely from the lacrosse team that spilled out to head to the field only a few minutes prior. I figure it's empty, but as I'm about to pass the door, voices inside halt me in my tracks.

"Did you apologize to Allison?"

That's Stiles' voice. I press myself against the wall just outside the door, figuring if Stiles is there, Scott likely is, too, and if I want to figure out what's going on with him, eavesdropping is probably going to be the only way for a while.

"Yeah," Scott responds, sounding breathless and distracted.

"Is she giving you a second chance, or...?" Stiles trails off and I frown, making a mental note to talk to Allison about giving Scott a second chance.

Maybe he deserves it, but he better have had a damn good apology or excuse for leaving her stranded at the party.

Scott answers him just the same as he had before, "Yeah."

"Yeah?" Stiles repeats excitedly. "All right! So, everything's good?"

"No," Scott states weakly.

"No...?" The confusion in Stiles' voice matches the confusion in my own drawn brow.

Why would Allison giving him a second chance not be a good thing?

"Remember...the hunters?" Scott asks, his voice seeming to become more aware and awake now. "Her dad is one of 'em."

I let my gaze float to the floor as I ponder why Scott seems to still sound freaked out. So, Allison's dad hunts? What's the big deal? He's like one of the hunters I've been hearing mentioned on the news explaining the bizarre animal activity the last few weeks.

But Stiles seems to mimic Scott's muted hysteria, asking, "Her dad –?"

"–shot me–"

My eyes blow wide open at Scott's fractured explanation.

"Allison's father–?"

"–with a crossbow."

Jaw hitting the floor in absolute shock and horror, my body temperature starts to rise and I suddenly curse myself for wearing a blue sweater instead of the t-shirt I was going to wear today. I inhale deeply, heart picking up speed, not sure what else to think aside from the fact that Scott's just told Stiles that Allison's father shot him with a crossbow.
