DAMNATIO MEMORIAE
"And I'm thinking damn, if these walls could talk."
---Stiles' Point of View
When I open my eyes, it's to a bright light. I blink and try to adjust my eyes to the artificial lamp in my eyes and turn my head, expecting to see Dad still lying in the bed, but it's empty. The sheets are rumpled and he's absolutely nowhere in the room. finds his father is no longer there. Immediately, I'm on my feet and at the door, head swiveling down both sides of the hallway. I know my dad is here somewhere, I just have to find where.
And something tells me I'll find him where we've been having all of our problems—the morgue.
There were four other bodies recovered from the Nemeton last night, and among them was Donovan's. I press the basement floor for the hospital in the elevator and make my way down to the level. That's where I find Dad standing at the cubby where Donovan's body is and I sigh, already knowing the conversation that we're about to have.
"The story Theo told me about the library?" Dad starts after I've entered the room, standing at Donovan's cubby with him now. "That's how it happened, except it didn't happen to him."
I keep fiddling with my hands, looking away as I reply, guiltily, "Yeah."
"Stiles, I can't protect you if I don't know the truth," Dad says. "Did you really feel like you couldn't tell me?"
"I couldn't tell anyone," I say, because that was how I felt. Scott had all but forbidden the act that was committed, even if it wasn't done in cold blood. And when the truth did come out, it didn't exactly end well for us. I close my eyes as I admit, "Ainsley knew. She had some sort of feeling and came to find me, but she was the only one."
"Did you think that I wouldn't believe it was self-defense?" Dad asks.
"What if it wasn't?" I lift my head to meet my father's eyes. "What if I told you I wanted him dead?"
"I'd believe you," Dad says and I crease my brow. "I also believe that wanting someone dead and murdering them are two very different things."
"Yeah, but what if the judge doesn't think so?" I continue.
"Then to hell with the judge!" Dad exclaims quietly. "Stiles, it was self-defense. And I would destroy every shred of evidence to protect you if I had to. I would burn the whole Sheriff's Station to the ground."
His words take a moment to register. I know that Dad's done a lot and cut a lot of corners for me since he found out about this world, but I never thought he'd actually falsify information to protect me. His loyalty to me is just as great as mine is to him—as Ainsley's has always been to me.
Dad moves to push the table with Donovan's body back into the cubby and I move to help him, questions still circling my mind.
"What about upholding the law?" I ask, scratching the side of my face. "What about Kira?"
