"If I'm honest, I know I would give it all back for the chance to start over and rewrite an ending or two for the girl that I knew."

Stiles and I rush back to the school as fast as we can to warn Scott about Peter – Peter freaking Hale is the Alpha who has been terrorizing not only Scott, but us as well. I take it I'm just not going to like anyone in that family at all. The lacrosse field is practically empty when we get there, nothing but a few students and families milling about, talking excitedly.

I catch sight of the kick line team who look absolutely pissed that I was a no-show, but before I have the chance to come up with some ridiculous excuse, Stiles is grabbing my hand and tugging me toward the school. From the way that I can hear the lacrosse team shouting "state" over and over again, I'll assume the game went well.

Pushing through the crowd of people, we wordlessly agree that Scott will likely be in the boys' locker room if he isn't on the field or in the hallway. As we practically hit into the doorframe of the room, Stiles releases a breath and I yank my hand away from Stiles' at the sight of Scott sitting on one of the benches inside, holding the back of his neck as if there were a wound there.

"Dude, we have a huge problem," Stiles breathes out.

"Trust me," Scott replies grimly, looking up at us. "I know."

I raise an eyebrow. "What do you mean?" I ask him.

"Derek was just here," Scott informs us. I share a glance with Stiles because how the hell did Derek get here before we did? He was in the middle of getting his ass handed to him when we left the hospital. "With his uncle. The Alpha."

"That's what we were coming to tell you," Stiles tells Scott.

Scott rubs the back of his neck and shakes his head. "Peter did something to me," he says. "He stuck his claws into the back of my neck and it's like...I was living all his memories. The fire, him killing Laura, all the other killings. He wants me to help kill the Argents, and now Derek's on his side."

I release a slow breath, stomach dropping all the way down to my feet.

---

"Remind me once again why we're helping this asshat?" I ask as we pull into an abandoned parking lot after school.

The asshat in question is, you guessed it, Jackson. "Well, Allison's dad and her aunt are convinced he's the second beta," Scott answers.

"But aren't you the second beta?" I question from where I'm sitting in the backseat of the Jeep. "If it takes the target off your back, why are you trying to help him?"

Scott is silent for a moment, and then he replies, but it's simply just a sigh.

I look ahead and see Jackson standing outside of his Porsche with the hood open, and Argent standing with him, talking to him. "Jackson actually wants the bite," I remind him, playing with the bunched up fabric of my jeans. "You might as well show him what's going to happen to him if he actually does end up becoming a werewolf."
