FRAYED
"When people run in circles it's a very, very mad world."
---"So, Deucalion's blind and Derek, before everything happened, kicked you out?" I ask Isaac as I sit in front of him. We're on a bus headed to a cross country meet, and since I'm the team manager I have no choice but to come along, but the weather doesn't seem to be holding up. My things are in the back with Stiles and Scott, but I saw Isaac get on and wanted to ask him about his lunch detention the other day, since with everything that happened, I want to talk about something normal again, and we just ended up talking about things that weren't normal, but I hadn't been aware of. "Oh, and when you were in lunch detention with Allison, you guys got locked in a storage closet and you tried to kill her. Oh! And to get back at the twins, you took one of their motorcycles apart and then drove the other one into the school."
Isaac nods. "Pretty much," he says.
I knit my brow at his easy response. "So where are you living now?" I question.
"I asked Scott if I could stay with him for a while," Isaac answers and I nod.
"I'd offer you a room in my house," I offer. "But I don't think that would go over well with my mom and step-dad."
"Thank anyway, Ainsley," he says with a small smile, which I half return.
I jump when the sound of a whistle blowing pierces my ear drums. I turn over my shoulder to see Coach standing there, looking less than pleased. "Back to your seat, Dunbar," he orders.
I flash Isaac a tight smile, muted in annoyance, as I get up and maneuver back to my seat. I sit down next to my bag, turning to look at the seat behind me, where Scott is resting his head against the window and Stiles is next to him, looking down at a tablet, reading out PSAT vocabulary words. "Hey, yo, Scotty!" Stiles says to Scott, snapping his fingers. "Still with me?"
"Yeah, sorry," Scott apologizes, snapping out of his daze. "Uh, what's the word?"
"Anachronism," Stiles reads off the tablet.
"Something that exists out of its normal time."
"Nice! Okay, next word, incongruous," Stiles says.
"Uh, can you use it in a sentence?" Scott asks, grimacing a bit.
"Yes. Yes, I can!" Stiles exclaims. "It's completely incongruous that we're sitting on a bus right now, on our way to some stupid cross-country meet, after what just happened. Incongruous."
Scott pauses and I sit with my back against the window as I look at the two of them from my seat. "Out of place, ridiculous, absurd," I answer.
"Perfect," Stiles replies with a smile and I knit my brow, my lips threatening to form a full smile. "Okay, next word. Um...Darach. Darach. It's a noun?" Scott and I exchange looks before we glance at Stiles tiredly. "We have to talk about it sometime, okay? And we're gonna be stuck in this thing for, like, five hours, so why not?" I agree that we need to talk about it, but maybe not right now. Scott leans against the window, his eyes closing briefly. Stiles sighs. "Next word. Intransigent."
