MAGIC BULLET
"The moment I said it, the moment I opened my mouth."
---Stumbling up to the kitchen, I rub my tired eyes, going straight for the tea kettle. I smile lightly when I see it's already full of water, the burner underneath it partially warmed up, making me a thousand times happier than I had been just seconds prior. I flip the burner on and it takes less than three minutes for the water to boil. I open the cabinet and reach for the mugs, grasping one in my hand before placing it on the counter, taking a tea bag out of the box and placing it inside the mug. I pour the water in, watching as dark liquid rises in the cup, growing darker and darker as it brews. I go over to the refrigerator to grab the milk, pouring it into the tea after removing the bag, watching the chocolatey color swirl into a beige.
I stir the drink before raising it to my lips, taking a gulp of the scalding beverage. It burns my chest as I swallow, but I don't mind, because caffeine is a lifesaver and it's going to wake me up. I didn't get much sleep the last two nights, since I'm pretty sure I'm losing my damn mind. I don't know what came over me, thinking that Scott's a werewolf. I mean, it's crazy. Werewolves don't exist. There's no way it's possible.
But part of me still believes it's the truth.
David walks in a moment later, laughing lightly at the sight of me hungrily drinking the tea. He nods to the kettle, stating, "I figured that would make you happy."
"Did you have it on warm for me?" I ask, knitting my brow, because he's never done that before.
He shrugs as he walks over to the coffee maker, reaching into the same cabinet I had gone in to grab a mug. "Yeah, I'm never really here in the mornings and I don't get to see as much of you or Liam as I want, but your mom talks about your caffeine addiction a lot," David explains, pouring coffee into his mug. I chuckle into my cup. "Thought I'd try and be a good step-dad for once."
I draw my eyebrows, setting my mug on the counter as I tilt my head. "A good step-dad for once?" I repeat as David moves around the kitchen to make breakfast. "You do know you've done more for both Liam and me than our actual father ever did, right?"
David is the one to tilt his head now. "Ainsley –"
"No, I really mean it, David," I interject, inhaling sharply. "You really have done a lot for us. So much – I mean, I can't think of a single thing my father ever did for any of us except cause problems."
My gaze falls to the floor, to the tops of my black ankle boots. "Your father doesn't know what he's missing," David says after a moment. "You and Liam are amazing kids. I couldn't ask for anyone better. And your mom, well –"
I raise my head, an eyebrow following. "Think about the words that will come out of your mouth next," I say. "That's my mother you're talking about."
David smiles, shaking his head as he chuckles to himself. "You three are the best thing that's ever happened to me," he tells me.
