"I can't get beyond the questions."
---

"Gerard threatened you?" I ask Scott as we walk down the hallway toward our first period AP Language Arts class the following Monday after Stiles and I had been trapped in the school swimming pools by the Kanima.

"For lack of a better term, yeah," Scott sighs in response.

I inhale, shaking my head. "You know, I've never had the urge to maim an old person, but...Gerard seriously makes me consider if it's worth it," I inform him as I enter the classroom behind him.

Scott chuckles for a moment as he takes his seat. I go to sit down in the row beside him, but stop short when I see someone sitting in the seat that I usually sit in. I don't need him to turn around for me to know who he is – the curly hair says it all. Isaac's back somehow, even though he's been a fugitive since he escaped the Sheriff's Station after his father's murder. I sit in the only available seat right behind him, sharing a confused look with Scott.

"Dude, I just talked to my dad, who just talked to Jackson, and I've got really terrible, horrible, very, very bad news..." I hear Stiles' babbling voice exclaim quietly.

"...I think I already know," Scott mutters, and I'm pretty sure I know they're talking about Isaac.

As soon as class ends, I gather my things and move to exit the row that I've been sitting in. Isaac stands from his seat, turns around, and glances at me. I meet his eyes, tilting my head because why the hell is he looking at me? He turns back around and walks away without saying anything and I shake off the strange interaction before finally leaving the row and exiting the room. Stiles and Scott are at the door of the room, and when they see me approaching, they wait for me to reach them. Once I do, the three of us begin walking down the hallway toward our next classes and the first thing I say is, "How the hell is Isaac free?"

"According to my dad, Jackson took back his statement about seeing him and his dad argue the night of the murder," Stiles explains with a sigh. "So, he's free."

"Great," I mutter, rolling my eyes.

"All right, I only found one thing online called a Kanima," Stiles says after a moment. "It's a werejaguar from South America that goes after murderers."

"That thing was not a jaguar," Scott points out.

I frown. "That was definitely some type of lizard," I add on, agreeing with Scott.

"Yeah, and I'm not exactly a murderer," Stiles replies. He gestures to me. "Neither is Ainsley!"

But I am.

"Yeah, but you guys did see it kill somebody, which is probably why it tried to kill you guys," Scott explains and I knit my brow, trying to stop the onslaught of thoughts about Bronwyn's death and that I might be the reason the Kanima is drawn to us. "And it's still trying to kill you, and it probably won't stop until you're dead."
